Day one at Royal Ascot: who remains in contention to run on Tuesday?
Superstar miler Baaeed has shortened at the head of the betting for the opening race of the royal meeting after Master Of The Seas, one of his main market rivals, was among the five horses taken out of the Queen Anne Stakes (2.30) at Wednesday's five-day confirmation stage.
His trainer Charlie Appleby issued a statement that the four-year-old gelding, last seen running out a comfortable winner of the Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket's Craven meeting, had disappointed in his work and would not be running on Tuesday.
He said: "Master Of The Seas will now bypass the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot after disappointing in his last piece of work."
Dilawar, Saffron Beach, Pearls Galore and Alcohol Free, who won the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, were the others who were not among the acceptors as just ten remained for the £600,000 Group 1.
The most notable absentee from the day's other Group 1 over a mile, the St James's Palace Stakes for which 14 remain, was another Godolphin runner in Native Trail, who had been a best-priced 6-1 third favourite.
The 2,000 Guineas runner-up, who won the Irish equivalent, was taken out of the race at the five-day stage along with Prix du Jockey Club third Modern Games with Appleby relying upon Newmarket Classic hero Coroebus.
The William Haggas-trained pair of My Prospero and Maljoom, both unbeaten this season, stood their ground in a race that also lost Point Lonsdale and Eydon from those towards the head of the market.
The big two international raiders in the King's Stand (3.40), Golden Pal from America and Nature Strip from Australia, remain among the 20 – but French hope Suesa, winner of the King George Stakes at Goodwood last year, will not go to post as the George Strawbridge-owned filly was removed by trainer Francois Rohaut.
The Richard Hannon-trained dual Group 3 winner Happy Romance was another notable absentee.
The three at the head of the ante-post betting for the Coventry Stakes (3.05) – the Appleby-trained Noble Style, Aidan O'Brien's Blackbeard and Hannon's Persian Force – were among the 22 entries made for the Group 2 with O'Brien's Aesop's Fables, a best-priced 12-1, the most notable absentee.
A total of 27 were entered for the Listed Wolferton(5.35), headed by ante-post favourite Addeybb, with the day's two handicaps – the Ascot Stakes (5.00) and Copper Horse Stakes (6.10) – attracting fields of 49 and 64 respectively.
Queen Anne Stakes (Tuesday, June 14)
Coral: 2-7 Baaeed, 7 Real World, 8 Aldaary, 12 Chindit, 14 Mother Earth, Order Of Australia, 20 Lights On, 33 Accidental Agent, Happy Power, 40 Sir Busker
