Andrea Atzeni lodges appeal against Guineas suspension

Andrea Atzeni has lodged an appeal against the six-day ban he received on the final day of the Craven meeting at Newmarket last Thursday.

The 28-year-old jockey was suspended after the stewards deemed him guilty of using his whip in the wrong place on Beringer, who won the mile handicap to give the rider his third of four winners on the Rowley Mile last week.

The jockey said on Tuesday morning: "I'm appealing against the ban. I've nothing to lose."

The suspension currently rules him out of the Qipco Guineas meeting at Newmarket on May 4 and 5, during which time he could have ridden Emaraaty Ana in the 2,000 Guineas.

Speaking when the suspension was announced, Atzeni indicated he had planned to ride in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas, as well as impressive Wood Ditton winner UAE Jewel if he was involved at the two-day meeting.

Atzeni rode the Roger Varian-trained Mot Juste in the Nell Gwyn, finishing second behind stablemate Qabala, who was on Tuesday a top-priced 4-1 for the 1,000 Guineas.

Atzeni's ban runs from May 2-7 inclusive. The appeal will be heard on Friday morning.
