Alan King's daughter Georgia lands an unforgettable win in charity Derby at 16
Eventing might have to take a back seat for Alan King's daughter Georgia after the 16-year-old on Monday led home a stable one-two on Sula Island in a charity race run over the full Derby distance in aid of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and Hannah's Wilberry Wonder Pony Charity.
The proud father, who saddled Sula Island with four-and-a-half stone of lead, described it as "one of the most nerve-wracking races I've ever been involved in", but added: "Georgia's given her a lovely ride. She's been so laid-back and didn't panic. She slept most of the way and had a three-course lunch. That's something special."
Georgia King, who will return to school for her A-levels and then take out an amateur riders' licence next year, has been riding out two or three lots a day, and it showed.
She said: "That was amazing, but it was over so quickly, as everyone told me it would be. My arms were dead and I think I got there a bit soon, but she was cruising and I had to let her go.
"When I saw her in the paddock she was a bit on her toes and I came off her when she reared up coming down the chute, but after being a bit difficult at the start she was very good once we got going."
She added: "I found out only two weeks ago I was riding. I'm looking forward to getting an amateur's licence now."
