After recent 40-1 and 25-1 shocks, could another outsider cause a Derby upset?
Desert Crown and Stone Age sit at the top of the market for next Saturday's Cazoo Derby at Epsom, but could there be some value among the outsiders? The last five winners have returned at 40-1, 16-1, 13-2, 25-1 and 16-1 and here we assess the chances of four contenders at double-figure prices . . .
Cazoo Derby (4.30 Epsom, June 4): racecard and betting
Walk Of Stars
Odds:16-1 generally
Form:31-12
Last run:second in Derby Trial, Lingfield
A beaten Godolphin favourite in Lingfield's Derby Trial going on to win the main event at Epsom – where have we heard that before?
Only 12 months ago Adayar was second in the same race before slamming his rivals on the Downs, and there is plenty of reason to be optimistic about Walk Of Stars' chance.
He had his excuses for the three-quarter length defeat to United Nations at Lingfield, wandering under pressure and giving the impression he will have learned a lot from that experience, while slower ground would also suit.
Charlie Appleby may believe Nations Pride is the best of his Derby contingent, but he wouldn't have picked out Adayar this time last year either.
Westover
Odds:16-1
Form:122-1
Last run:won bet365 Classic Trial, Sandown
Ralph Beckett has enjoyed Oaks success with Look Here and Talent and bids for a first Derby victory with this talented Juddmonte homebred.
Westover landed the bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown on his sole start this term, beating Cash by a short head and earning a Racing Post Rating of 109.
That leaves him some way short of the 120 recorded by Desert Crown in the Dante, but the step up to 1m4f promises to suit and he looks a viable each-way contender with versatility regarding conditions.
West Wind Blows
Odds:33-1
Form:1-1
Last run:won novice, Nottingham
This unbeaten colt is an intriguing dark horse for the Derby and arrives with a perfect 2-2 record following a debut win at Newcastle in December followed by a second novice success at Nottingham this month.
A step up from novice company to a Classic is an almighty jump but he pleased connections when galloping at the track on Monday and is expected to come into his own over 1m4f.
The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained West Wind Blows will have to post a huge career-best to go close and his lack of experience – like Desert Crown – is a concern with just two winners since 2000 landing the Derby on their third start.
Royal Patronage
Odds:25-1
Form:118-82
Last run:second in the Dante, York
Royal Patronage is the only horse to have beaten 2,000 Guineas winner Coroebus – when staying on well to land a Newmarket Group 2 last year – and his pedigree would suggest the step up to 1m4f would prove little problem.
Trainers Mark and Charlie Johnston have chosen to head here rather than the Prix du Jockey Club and there was little wrong with his second to Derby favourite Desert Crown in the Dante last time out. Reversing that form may be tough but far from impossible, and if the winner is as good as many believe Royal Patronage would surely have solid each-way claims at the least.
He is also one of the few in the line-up with track experience, having won impressively around Epsom last summer.
