Addeybb heads British challenge for $20m Saudi Cup

Champion Stakes winner Addeybb heads British interest for the second staging of the Saudi Cup after entries were revealed for the world's most valuable race.

The William Haggas-trained three-time Group 1 winner, who will be partnered by Tom Marquand, is one of eight British entries for the $20 million contest in Riyadh, the highlight on the second day of a two-day meeting on February 19-20.

Haggas has also entered six-year-old mare Ummalnar while John Gosden has three entries: Mishriff, Dubai Warrior and Global Giant.

The Roger Charlton-trained Extra Elusive, Andrew's Balding's Bangkok and Tilsit, trained by Charlie Hills, complete the British challenge. Willie Mullins has the sole Irish entry, True Self.

More than 100 horses from nine countries – 17 of them Group 1 winners – have been entered for the feature race on the dirt, which was won by Maximum Security last year.

Roger Teal’s Group 1 July Cup winner Oxted is entered in both the $1.5m Dirt Sprint and $1m Turf Sprint, in which he could face the Godolphin-owned Space Blues.

The Charlie Fellowes-trained Prince Of Arran, placed in the last three runnings of the Melbourne Cup, and St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco could meet in the $2.5m Long Distance Turf Handicap.

Death of former royal jockey

Former royal jockey Richard Dennard has died. He was 76.

Dennard was apprentice to Peter Cazalet, the three-time champion jumps trainer in Britain who trained many horses for the Queen Mother, before becoming second rider for the yard in the early 1970s.

Horses owned by the Queen Mother provided Dennard with some of his biggest victories with Black Magic landing the Scilly Isles Chase and Sandown Park Pattern Chase in 1971, while Inch Arran scored in the BP Chase at Aintree in 1972.

Dennard, who rode a personal best 33 winners in the 1970-71 season, also partnered the Queen Mother’s 200th winner when Master Daniel won at Worcester in December 1969.

Dennard is survived by his wife Diane, son Martin and daughter Simone.
