This afternoon's seven-race card at Lingfield has been called off after the track received what clerk of the course George Hill described as "a month's worth of rain in a week".

Lingfield's average rainfall for the entire month of October is 62 millimetres but up to 50 millimetres has fallen on the track over the last seven days.

Hill said: "We were forecasting three to six millimetres of rain yesterday and we've had 13. There's standing water and false ground across the track so it's not safe for racing.

"It's currently still raining here so we're going to get a bit more it looks like and there's no way it can improve before racing was due to start."

With more rain to come over the next two days, Hill is hoping a dry spell in the latter half of next week will allow the course's next meeting to take place on Tuesday, December 10.

"It looks dry after Tuesday and we really need that," Hill added. "It hasn't stopped raining. We've had 50 millimetres of rain this week and our average for October is about 62 millimetres, so we've had not far off a month's worth of rain in a week."
