Communique ran well for a long way in the Coronation Cup at Epsom – a race in which three of Mark Johnston’s four Hardwicke winners finished 535, the exception having made his seasonal reappearance. He beat Defoe on his previous start at Newmarket.

Defoe turned early season form around when landing the Coronation Cup and bids to be the first winner of the Group 1 to follow up here since Park Top in 1969. However, not many would have tried until penalties were abolished in 2012.
