Paul Kealy's play of the day at York
Germanic
2.40 York
Although by Guineas winner Saxon Warrior, who stayed 1m2f if not quite the 1m4f of the Derby (fourth), Germanic's dam has produced three other winners in Britain and of their 14 combined successes, only one has been over as far as 7f, and it looks very much like Germanic is going to take after his siblings rather than his old man.
He looked an incredibly well-handicapped horse when bounding well clear at Doncaster before the petrol gauge hit empty and he was way too keen in the early stages to ever have a chance of lasting home at Ascot last week, so this is surely the right move.
Haggas won the race 12 months ago with Montassib, who has spent much of the previous two seasons over 7f and 1m, but this year won the Sprint Cup at Haydock, and while Germanic has a long way to go to be as good, he might just take a big step forwards with a positive ride over 6f rather than a restrained one over 7f.
