Paul Kealy's play of the day at Haydock
Whiskey Pete
1.30 Haydock
I was kicking myself for not backing Whiskey Pete ante-post for Haydock's opener (1.30), but he did have two other weekend entries and I chickened out.
He's a much shorter price now than he was then, but he's still very much the one to beat to these eyes following his back-to-form second to Brioni at Ascot last time. The way he travelled there suggests he'll have no problem dropping back to a mile, and might even relish it, and that run was a clear career-best since his win over that trip on soft ground at York as a juvenile.
Conditions are evidently perfect, then, and trainer Ralph Beckett has been firing in winners at an impressive rate all month.
You could certainly make a case for plenty of the older brigade in this as at least a couple are well treated on old form, but Whiskey Pete has more upside than those.
