Key quotes for the Newbury Hurdle as Harry Derham nominates his 'team captain' from his eight entries
Trainer quotes looking ahead to the Newbury Hurdle on February 8
Harry Derham, trainer of Washington, Queens Gamble, Brentford Hope, Ascending Lark, Balhambar, Court In The Act, Givemefive and Just Ennemi
Washington is our team captain at this stage. His trip to Ireland went very well and the runner-up Enniskerry franked the form when winning at Leopardstown over Christmas. We have lots entered and the next few days will tell us more, with Ascending Lark, Givemefive, Court In The Act and Brentford Hope all running. Brentford Hope’s first preference after Windsor will likely be the Kingwell Hurdle, while the two-and-a-quarter mile mares’ handicap hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival is first preference for Queens Gamble. We entered her in this though in case the ground is bottomless in Ireland.
Harry Fry, trainer of Beat The Bat and Altobelli
Beat The Bat runs at Windsor on Friday and Altobelli will step up in trip at Ascot on Saturday so those runs will tell us more. Beat The Bat has some good form at around this trip, including when second to Dysart Enos at Cheltenham, while we feel Altobelli will be suited by going over further, but options are open for both.
