Kiefer can play starring role when there is an emphasis on stamina

James Pyman with his runners to watch from the past week

Venturous
Trainer: David Barron
4th, Chester, September 1
The first two home were drawn one and two in this 5½f handicap and Dark Shot (drawn three) may have finished third with a clear run. Consequently, Venturous, from his wide berth in eight, should be given credit for closing to within a length and a quarter of the winner, Bossipop, at the finish. Venturous is without a win since 2015 but can be competitive off his current mark.

Harrogate
James Bethell
3rd, Chester, September 1
Thirty-five minutes after Bossipop crossed the line, Billy Dylan (drawn two) led home Gabrial The Devil (stall one) in this 5f handicap to again reward punters who perm horses drawn one and two in reverse forecasts at this track, where it’s often a big advantage in sprints to be low. Harrogate is the one to take out of the race. This three-year-old slightly missed the break from stall six, which meant he was always playing catch up. On the final bend he was at least half a dozen lengths off the lead, but flew home and was only a length and a quarter adrift at the line.

Escape The City
Hughie Morrison
3rd, Beverley, September 1
This steadily improving filly finished third in the 1m Sandringham earlier this season and it might be worth trying her over a longer distance than this 1m2f. She made relentless progress in the home straight, seemingly appreciating the rising ground, and was not stopping at the end. Previously over the same trip at Nottingham she was doing her best work at the business end, and her half-sister won over 1m4f.
