Diesel Line (1.03 Wincanton)

Exeter bumper winner who improved from his handicap debut seventh in a 2m1½f race at Fontwell when going right-handed and up in trip to 2m3f last time. Diesel Line chased home Star Of Affinity at this track last month and the winner went on to score by five and a half lengths in a 13-runner Kempton event off a 7lb higher mark. That suggests that the selection should be capable of coping with a 2lb rise especially as State Of Fame, who he beat by half a length, ran a similarly solid race to finish second after being upped 1lb on his next outing. The 2m5½f trip should be in his favour and Jay Tidball is a decent first-time booking from Jeremy Scott for the conditional jockeys' race.

Nocte Volatus (2.05 Haydock)

The Flier Begley beat Nocte Volatus by three and a quarter lengths at Market Rasen last time but the runner-up meets the same rival on 4lb better terms here. Nocte Volatus should be suited by the return to a left-handed track as he has won his last two starts going that way round whereas his last four defeats have all beeen at right-handed venues. The ten-year-old split subsequent December Gold Cup winner Gemirande and Ascot scorer Terresita on his penultimate outing and has to be seriously respected in veterans' company, even off top weight.

Battle Born Lad (3.50 Haydock)

The form of Battle Born Lad's successful hurdling debut at Hexham in October has worked out well as he beat the 137-rated Wendigo off level weights by a length. Wendigo has subsequently easily won races at Ludlow and Wetherby by a combined 12 and a half lengths either side of finishing second to The New Lion in the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle. Prince Of Perth was more than 18 lengths behind Battle Born Lad and has won twice since while Sunset Hill, fifth to Battle Born Lad at Hexham, was a 21-length winner of a Kelso mares' novice hurdle in December. The step up to 3m½f should not be an issue for the son of Califet as he is a half-brother to 3m3f winner Dillarchie and the fact he was third behind subsequent Grade 2 winner Dedicated Hero suggests that he can be competitive in this better company.
