'The 11-1 available seems very generous indeed' - David Jennings bids to follow up his 25-1 winner last Saturday
David Jennings answers Friday's burning questions after correctly picking out 25-1 Sprint Cup winner Montassib last Saturday . . .
What's the big story?
A small enough, but very select, field for the the Group 2 Betfred Howard Wright Doncaster Cup Stakes (3.35) in which not only do we have last year's one-two returning – Trueshan and Sweet William – but also the previous year's winner Coltrane. Throw in the likes of Point Lonsdale and Gregory and you have got yourself a smashing staying heat.
You would need a first-class honours degree in debating to make a decent case for five of the six.
So, who wins the Doncaster Cup?
Gregory seems to be getting slower with age. That's probably not the best way to commence a case for him winning the Doncaster Cup but, the thing is, this is two miles and two furlongs and stamina will be the trump card.
He was only a head behind Sweet William when the pair last clashed in the Goodwood Cup won by the mighty Kyprios and this track, this trip and this terrain should be just about perfect for Gregory. This looks his for the taking.
It's been a long time between drinks for the son of Golden Horn, who went 3-3 in his first three starts but is 0-6 since then. The minute he crossed the line in the Lonsdale Cup my immediate reaction was that he would win the Doncaster Cup over further on a stiffer track, so here we are. Now is not the time to change your mind.
What's the bet of the day?
Patience, please. Wait for the eighth and final race of the day at Doncaster where Fantasy Master floats my boat in the 5f handicap (5.55).
The most recent of his four wins was at Doncaster and he's been plying his trade in higher quality sprints than this one of late. I would have been happy to take 8-1 each-way, so the 11-1 available in a few spots is very generous indeed. I'll be gutted if he's not in the first four.
Who's the lay of the day?
Subsequent looks a bit skimpy in the opening Betfred Mallard Handicap (1.50). He has plenty on his plate here.
What's the best piece of punting advice for Friday?
Keep Hector Crouch on your side at Salisbury.
All five of his mounts have a squeak and I'm particularly keen on Port Hedland in the concluding 6f handicap (7.10). Don't be surprised to see him come away with a double, or even a treble, or maybe even more.
