Southwell Placepot tips: Graeme Rodway with his selections for a £50,000 guaranteed pool

Deputy betting editor

The Tote’s £50,000 Placepot guarantee is at Southwell and the fillies’ mile maiden (4.25) is a three-runner race, so the winner is needed. Newcomers Merry Widow and Santorini Star represent top yards and are unknown quantities, but I’ll take a chance on them.

The 5f apprentice handicap (5.00) comes up next and Saturday’s Chelmsford winner Papa Don’t Preach is going to be popular. However, he hasn't shown much in three runs at this course and is worth opposing with Street Life and Soul Singer, who was beaten a short head on his sole start here.

Shamrock Breeze is another shaky favourite in division one of the 6f fillies' novice (5.30). Chiringita is open to plenty more improvement after two promising runs and gets the vote.

The second division (6.00) is another difficult one but Dear Cat ran a quick time when winning at Salisbury in August and this is easier than when she was ninth at Doncaster last time.

Cliffcake loves Southwell and goes in alongside Spirit Of Applause in the 6f handicap (6.30), while the last leg (7.00) is a good chance for a banker with the in-form Zero Carbon.
