'She looks overpriced at around the 8-1 mark' - Maddy Playle with tips for all nine races on ITV on Sunday
Maddy Playle returns with her advice for the nine ITV races at the Curragh and Doncaster on Sunday . . .
1.50 Curragh
Irish Stallion Farms EBF Bold Lad Sprint Handicap, 6f
Maddy's tip: Strike Red
Richard Fahey has won this race twice in the last ten years with George Bowen and Mr Lupton, so Strike Red deserves plenty of respect. He's been running well all season and plundered a big sprint handicap here off a 1lb lower mark last July. He outran his 18-1 odds to finish second at York last time and that suggested he was ready to win again soon.
2.05 Doncaster
Pertemps Network Handicap, 5f
Maddy's tip: Arecibo
A tough sprint in which any one of the runners could win if producing their best. Arecibo hasn't won since May 2021, but he's been consistent off marks a long way short of his best on his last couple of runs, including when second at Haydock last time. He's also run some of his best races in big handicaps at this track.
2.25 Curragh
Moyglare 'Jewels' Blandford Stakes (Group 2), 1m2f
Maddy's tip: Rogue Millennium
A tricky Group 2 with not much between any of the runners. However, you could argue last year's Duke of Cambridge winner Rogue Millennium is overpriced at around the 8-1 mark. Her Group 1 thirds to Porta Fortuna and Msqe De Sevigne the last twice aren't far off the best form in the race. This 1m2f trip is definitely worth another go now she's a little older and perhaps this will be the day it all clicks for her with Joseph O'Brien.
2.40 Doncaster
Betfred City Of Doncaster Handicap, 7f
Maddy’s tip: Ten Pounds
This is a hot handicap which is sure to throw up a three-year-old capable of competing in Group company. Ten Pounds may just have the edge over Fifty Nifty at this stage of their respective careers, as he looked more the finished article when bolting up at Newcastle. He’s proven on the turf and is one to follow through the autumn.
3.00 Curragh
Moyglare Stud Stakes (Group 1), 7f
Maddy's tip: Red Letter
Bedtime Story put in a super performance to win the Chesham Stakes by a street but she didn't beat any superstars and her two wins since haven't looked quite as good, for all she has beaten her stablemate Exactly. Red Letter looks by far the best horse she will have faced and she was unlucky not to beat subsequent Sweet Solera winner Lake Victoria before breaking her maiden in style over course and distance.
3.15 Doncaster
Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies' Stakes (Group 3), 7f
Maddy’s tip: Fair Angellica
Fair Angellica looks a worthy favourite for this Group 3. She has yet to run badly with the exception of the Sandringham at Royal Ascot, when the ground was too fast, and an easy Listed win in France last time underlined her potential. She would not look out of place in a Group 1 in a few months and this looks the perfect opportunity for her.
3.35 Curragh
Bar One Racing Flying Five Stakes (Group 1), 5f
Maddy's tip: Bradsell
Nunthorpe hero Bradsell looks a worthy favourite to make it a second Group 1 this season. Although running against a deep field, he showed his class when a dominant winner at York and don't forget he already has a Coventry Stakes and King's Stand on his CV. It's also worth remembering he only returned from injury this season in August, so there should be more to come in races like the Prix de l'Abbaye and potentially Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint this season.
3.45 Doncaster
Graham Lee Vickers.Bet Leger Legends Classified Stakes, 1m
Maddy's tip: Hartswood
Only two favourites have won this race in the last ten years, so it's often a tricky contest to analyse and this year is no exception. Sammy Jo Bell won the race in 2019 and 2022, and she looks to have been found another able partner in Hartswood, who although not as effective as he was, is still among the highest rated here off a mark of 70. He looks too big a price at around 12-1.
4.15 Doncaster
Betfred 'The Classic Bookmaker' Handicap, 6½f
Maddy’s tip: Knebworth
Several of the old boys in this race have tumbled down the weights, including last year’s winner Baradar, who deserves taking seriously, but it could be worth chancing the four-year-old Knebworth. He has progressed nicely this season on the turf and all-weather, including when a rallying second at Haydock last time. He likes this track, too, having won here over half a furlong shorter in March, and he’s only 2lb higher now.
