Robbie Wilders' play of the day at Warwick
Eldorado Allen
Fingers crossed the meeting at Warwick passes its 7am inspection as Eldorado Allen is surely going to take the world of beating in the 3m veterans' handicap chase (2.25) for Joe Tizzard.
I was quite keen on Eldorado Allen for the Grand Sefton at Aintree this month before he failed to feature among the final declarations, but connections were clearly seeking a softer assignment for his seasonal introduction. I can't desert him on his first start in veterans' company, with the 3lb claim of bang-in-form Freddie Gingell easing his 12st burden.
Eldorado Allen's last run came in the Grand National in the spring, and he was really enjoying himself up front for much of the race before failing to stay the extreme distance (unsurprising as a former Haldon Gold Cup winner who has never appealed as an out-and-out stayer).
Apart from the major drop in class, the key to Eldorado Allen here is his record fresh, as his form figures first time out read 121123. The two seconds came when attempting to give 140-rated hurdler Mill Green 13lb at Sandown in 2020, and then running Bravemansgame to three and a half lengths in the 2022 Charlie Hall Chase, while the third came behind well-treated youngster Victtorino in the Sodexo Gold Cup at Ascot a year ago.
There is clearly nothing of the calibre of Bravemansgame among the other old-timers in opposition here and, while Eldorado Allen is evidently past his best, the ten-year-old won't need to be anywhere near that to win this cosily from the front.
