Maddy Playle's play of the day at Bath

One Glance

If you have a decent jumps horse, you would be foolish to not consider a staying campaign on the Flat.

The top jumps trainers have been gatecrashing Royal Ascot for years and once again they came to the fore at York where Magical Zoe struck in the Ebor and Vauban returned to his best in the Yorkshire Cup.

One man who has made a name for himself on the dual-purpose circuit in recent years, primarily due to the exploits of the magnificent multiple Group 1 winner Trueshan, is Alan King. His Flat runners always seem to punch above their weight and another winner could be incoming.

One Glance is from the family of versatile performer Midnights Legacy, who reached triple figures on the Flat, and she has made a pleasing start to her career in this sphere, with each of her three starts at Kempton showing increased promise.

She earned the comment 'eyecatcher' on her penultimate start when chasing home Fairy Glen, who was a short-head second in a Listed race in France on Sunday, and Beeley, who subsequently bolted up by five lengths at Ffos Las.

Last time she was only three and a half lengths behind Sea Just In Time, who has always been highly regarded by William Haggas and holds entries in the Arc and Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes. For context, the favourite for Bath's 1m3½f handicap (4.42), the John and Thady Gosden-trained Divine Presence, was more than ten lengths adrift of the same filly when they met at Newmarket in May. One Glance receives 2lb from her off an opening mark of 78.

Her last two runs alone make her of immediate interest, while King's only runner in this race in the last seven years was the 12-1 winner Tronada in 2020.

The hood has been taken off, which suggests One Glance is now ready to win, although keep an eye on Spirit Of The Bay. She is 11lb lower than her last winning mark and showed a bit of her old spark when a staying-on fourth at Ffos Las last month. That was a first decent run for John and Rhys Flint and Taylor Fisher is back aboard to take off 3lb.
