Paul Kealy's play of the day at Exeter

Djelo

2.25 Exeter

With only four runners since May, Venetia Williams has barely started, but she has targeted two Graded handicap chases so far and come away with a winner at Ascot and a second at Wetherby, and she may well land another with Djelo in the BetMGM Haldon Gold Cup (2.25) at Exeter.

Djelo was beaten in his last four chases last season, but was knocked sideways when falling at the first at Lingfield, and he ran solid races when second to Nickle Back in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles at Sandown before running third to Grey Dawning and Ginny's Destiny in the Turners at the Cheltenham Festival.

Although ultimately outclassed by the front two at Cheltenham, it was still another step forward for Djelo, who didn't jump as well as he can, and you can forgive a poor effort dropped back to a bare 2m at Aintree after a long season.

We should have no worries with him returning after a break as he won on his racecourse debut in France in November 2021, gagged up on his stable debut for Williams here 12 months later and beat the now 154-rated Master Chewy on his return at Aintree last year.

There could well be plenty of pace on as favourite JPR One, Etalon (might not run if ground is deemed too fast) and Scarface can go on, as can Djelo, who has won from the front before.

He has also won under a hold-up ride, though, so is versatile and Charlie Deutsch can put him wherever he wants.
