Paul Kealy's play of the day at Ascot

Tiffany

2.35 Ascot

In the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, Kalpana has been a hot ante-post favourite for a while and was as short as 7-4 in places a few days ago.

She's out to 3-1 now, but I think that's a case of some reality returning to the market, as there is no way any horse deserves to be that short in this race, let alone one who is not actually officially the best (that's Yorkshire Oaks winner Content) and has never faced easy turf.

Kalpana is clearly very talented and could easily win if she handles the surface, but I wouldn't mind betting she drifts a little further as I'd be 4-1 the field at least.

The German-trained Quantanamera, who destroyed mudlark Arrest on bad ground at Deauville in August, is certainly of interest, but preference is for a filly who has been doing some winning in Germany but is trained in Britain.

Tiffany has won four of her last five outings very easily, three of them this season, and the only time she has suffered defeat was when slipping on the bend at Haydock in the Lancashire Oaks, after which the meeting was abandoned.

It didn't look the worst slip, but it may have unsettled her as she never looked happy afterwards. She still managed to finish second to Queen Of The Pride, but I'd prefer to focus on her form before and after at Baden Baden (twice) and Newcastle, when each time she won going away.

This is going to be a fair test even if the ground doesn't turn out to be desperate, and she appeals as the type to relish it.
