Newcastle Placepot tips: Gary Savage's selections for a £50,000 guaranteed pool

There's £50,000 guaranteed in the Tote Placepot at Newcastle and a decent payout looks likely.

A middle-distance handicap kicks things off at 4.24 and Sycamore Gap should have enough to grab a place. This is a different scenario to his narrow defeat at Hamilton last time, but he ran okay here in June and Jamie Spencer gets the leg up this time.

A 1m2f handicap is at 4.55 and Loom Large, a course-and-distance winner last October, looks likely to play a leading role having got himself well handicapped on turf.

Division two of the 1m2f handicap (5.25) looks even weaker and a chance is taken on Carlton enjoying a return to Newcastle. The form of any of his three runs here in January would be enough to bag a place.

Unique Spirit will be popular in the 2m½f handicap at 6.00, but his good run here was only five days ago and I'm opposing him with Pop The Champagne. Her stable have done okay with their limited number of Flat runners.

The fillies' novice (6.30) is a real step up in quality, with all five who have run displaying decent form. Simon and Ed Crisford have a 42 per cent strike-rate with juveniles here and Primrose Path should appreciate the stiff track.

The final leg is a nursery (7.00) and half of the field are making their handicap debuts. They will do well to cope with hat-trick-seeking Shielas Well, who has been in sparkling form and the return to 7f should be no obstacle, with the claim of a good apprentice in Tommie Jakes offsetting most of the penalty she carries for her last win.
