Nap of the day: best horse racing tips for the day's six meetings

Thursday's best bets from the Racing Post's unbeatable Spotlights team . . .

Southwell

2.00: Hot To Dot

This looks a competitive nursery in which several hold claims. Qaseem and Del Ray finished runner-up in their latest starts, while Sunshine State is 1-1 on the all-weather and Caledonian could figure if resuming his progress on nursery/all-weather debut. However, it's hard to oppose Hot To Dot, who is 4lb well in after having gone so close at Newcastle nine days ago.

Clonmel

2.05: Allegorie De Vassy

Last year's winner Allegorie De Vassy bids to make another winning seasonal return although this time she faces quicker ground than she has ever raced on. A return to more patient tactics, following a below-par Punchestown run, seems on the cards and she gets narrow preference over the admirable Shecouldbeanything, who surely has still more improvement in her. The battle for third appears between Must Be Obeyed and the selection's stablemate Pink In The Park.

Newbury

1.40: Destroytheevidence

Good prospect Destroytheevidence is taken to defy top weight and follow up his Chepstow success. Hugos New Horse, an interesting chase debutant assuming he's back to form, is second choice.

Ludlow

3.35: The Kniphand

Inflexible, Rockinastorm and Ask Brewster – preferred in that order – all have plenty going for them but The Kniphand produced a good performance on last month's seasonal debut at Southwell and gets the vote.

Newcastle

2.45: Jkr Cobbler

Tuesday night's exertions may have left a mark on Drakeholes and Tickets but of the pair the latter makes the greater appeal with a weights turnaround. Preference is for Jkr Cobbler, comfortably on top in another course-and-distance Class 6 last week and 3lb well in. Alternatives are not easily found, though Sky Lagoon was at least progressive at a low level in her qualifying races.

Chelmsford

8.30: Expensive Queen

Three-year-olds have made up less than 50 per cent of the runners in previous runnings of this and accounted for all four winners, including two at double-figure prices, and Expensive Queen can extend the sequence for a yard in good form. Hat Toss looked a bit unlucky back on the all-weather last time and is the pick of the older brigade, narrowly ahead of Pjanoo, who goes well fresh.
