'I think 6-1 is a remarkable price' - David Jennings answers all the big questions ahead of British Champions Day

What's the big story?

Champions Day, the perfect culmination to the Flat campaign, and what a Qipco Champion Stakes (3.55) we have in store with Economics, winner of the Irish equivalent, taking on French ace Calandagan. Arc third Los Angeles adds further spice to a very tasty dish.

Charyn has been the standout miler all summer, but can he do it on a cold and wet Saturday in Berkshire? You'll find out at 3.15 when he faces a dozen rivals in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Kyprios doesn't get beaten these days and have a word with yourself if you think it's going to happen in the Long Distance Cup (1.20). Funnily enough, though, he's been beaten in it before.

There is the next step up the ladder in the career of Kalpana in the Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (2.35), while the evergreen Kinross is out to win another Group 1 on his beloved soft ground in the Champions Sprint (1.55).

The jumps can wait for a week. This is a Saturday for Flat fans to savour.

Who wins the Qipco Champion Stakes (3.55)?

Economics. We knew he had the flair when he dazzled in the Dante, but the Irish Champion Stakes proved he could get down and dirty. He can win ugly. That made a man of him and I expect him to put Calandagan in his place.

Oh, don't be surprised to see King's Gambit outrun his odds at around 25-1. I think he'll finish in the first three.

And what about the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (3.15)?

Everybody seems to be knocking Charyn because "he's been on the go all season". Eh, hello, so has everything else in the race. He's just better than these. Simple.

What's the bet of the day?

Don't let age put you off Montassib in the Champions Sprint (1.55). Yes, I know he's six and all the stats are against him, but the weather is all for him and he won the Sprint Cup at Haydock on ground that was far too quick for him. These are his terms and conditions and 6-1 is a remarkable price given he has beaten most of these already.

And the lay of the day?

Calandagan. I just can't envisage a scenario where he beats Economics. For all you Calandagan fans out there, you'll be pleased to know I've been wrong before and, quite possibly, might be wrong again some day, so don't be too disheartened.
