'I cannot believe he's 8-1 and I think he'll win' - David Jennings bids to follow up his 22-1 winner last week
David Jennings answers Saturday's burning questions after correctly picking out 22-1 Irish Cambridgeshire winner Wigmore Street last week
What's the big story?
A big sprint crying out for a big star to emerge.
Previous winners Harry Angel, and most definitely Dayjur, would carry the field for this year's Betfair Sprint Cup (3.35) on their backs and still win it, but it is a compelling contest nonetheless with an endless supply of ifs, buts and maybes.
If Inisherin is as good as he was at Royal Ascot in the Commonwealth Cup he will probably win, but was that race actually any good? If Elite Status is the potential superstar we saw in the Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury earlier this summer, maybe he's the sprinting star we've been craving.
If Bucanero Fuerte is as good at three as he was at two, surely he'd beat these? He's rated 120, 3lb higher than anything else, but he's 12-1. Make sense of that.
And, then there is Montassib. I'm utterly convinced he will win the Champions Sprint at Ascot next month and I'd prefer to back him at 14-1 for that than 12-1 for this. Although, if the ground was to still have some juice in it at Haydock he would be very interesting indeed.
So many questions. Confused? Thought so.
So, who wins the Betfair Sprint Cup?
If all the horses were the same price, the selection would be Inisherin. They're not, though, and 7-2 seems skimpy enough.
If the rains come before 3.35 I would be all over Montaasib and, as mentioned above, don't forget to back him for the Champions Sprint now at 14-1 as he's almost guaranteed his beloved soft ground there. Bucanero Fuerte is the other one who looks overpriced here at 12-1.
What's the bet of the day?
Knightswood in the Betfair Exchange Old Borough Cup (2.25) at Haydock. Look, I know he would find trouble in an empty room that hasn't even been painted yet, but surely he'll get lucky one of these days, and the make-up of this looks just about perfect for him.
I don't think he stayed 2m last time and he didn't get enough cover either. It was a fine effort in the circumstances, as was his previous try at Glorious Goodwood, where he surely would have won had about a million doors not been slammed shut in his face.
A flat Haydock is the ideal track for him and I cannot believe he's 8-1. I think he'll win.
Who's the lay of the day?
Hamish in the Unibet September Stakes (2.35) at Kempton. The all-weather specialist Lion's Pride can tame him.
Is Cicero's Gift a play or a lay in the opener at Haydock?
Just about a play, provided it's not quick ground. It's marginal. He's the best horse in the race and that counts for a lot.
What's the best piece of punting advice for Saturday?
A small stakes Yankee with Managing Director (2.05 Thirsk), Knightswood (2.25 Haydock), Lion's Pride (2.35 Kempton) and Emerald Harmony (4.00 Navan).
