Douglas Whyte is ready to get off the mark for the season with straight-track specialist Carroll Street in the 5f handicap (10.10) on the ten-race card at Sha Tin. The Hong Kong legend, bracing himself for Zac Purton overtaking him for the all-time number of winners ridden by a jockey, has saddled two seconds and a third from 13 runners at two meetings so far.
Carroll Street can take full advantage of a drop in grade to break the ice for the South African-born trainer. All five of the gelding’s wins have been over course and distance and, drawn perfectly in stall 11, he is set to enhance that record.
French import Stellar Express, who won three races for Francis Graffard, has been a source of frustration for local punters but he may be more comfortable in his second season and could easily sneak a place.
Purton has already put five wins on the board in a typically bright start to the new season, and again he has an excellent book of rides, with arguably the best being the Pierre Ng-trained Aeroinvincible in the 7f handicap.
Purton replaces Andrea Atzeni on the four-year-old, who is another dropping in class, which makes him an attractive proposition as the last time he was in this grade, he cruised home by a length and a half. With a nice draw in stall four, he will be hard to beat.
Atzeni’s mount Handsome Bomb has gone up 4lb in the ratings off the back of a win at this track in June and will run well, while the Frankie Lor-trained Enjoy Golf also shows promise and is another danger in an interesting race.
Perhaps the biggest pointer Purton gives punters is taking the mount on Super Win Dragon for Chris So in the 6f handicap on the all-weather track. The champion jockey was aboard when the dirt specialist won a barrier trial two weeks ago to have him primed for this.
The capable Magniac also goes well on the surface, having won over course and distance in January. He looks next best ahead of Packing Bole and Capital Delight, others who like racing on dirt.
