Trainer Danny Shum is set to continue his bright start to the new season when saddling the exciting Packing Power, who will be hard to beat in the Class 4 6f handicap sprint (1.10) at Happy Valley today.

Shum hit the ground running with a long-priced double at Sha Tin on the first day, a clear indication his team of horses are well forward, and now he focuses on Packing Power, a Toronado gelding, who impressed when winning on debut in June.

Now up 8lb in the ratings, Packing Power has nevertheless been drawn well (stall five) and has every chance of making it two from two.  He reportedly thrived on his off-season holiday at Conghua and recently trialled well there.

The Pierre Ng-trained Aurora Lady is one of several evenly matched dangers, which also include Tony Cruz’s Flying Wrote, who will enjoy the benefit of Angus Chung’s 3lb allowance, which should be useful.

Zac Purton, the seven-time champion, fired in a four-timer on Sunday to signal normal service had resumed, and he is set to continue in that vein today, when as well as Packing Power, he can also rely on Red Majesty to go close in the Class 4 Community Chest Cup (2.45), over the extended mile.

The David Hayes-trained Red Majesty has the perfect draw (stall one) and should be prominent in the short run to the first turn. The eight-year-old is a course and distance specialist, having recorded all his nine wins at the Valley over this trip. Dragon Star is his danger.

The finale, the Class 3 6f handicap sprint (3.50), is typically wide open but a horse who showed enormous promise earlier last season without quite going on to fulfil it, Super Joy N Fun, can regain the winning thread in the hands of 2lb claimer Jerry Chau.

The four-year-old dispensed with Class 4 opposition with a degree of contempt at his first two starts but he has found it harder one grade higher. However, with a break over summer, and now starting his second campaign, expect improvement.

Purton’s mount Ka Ying Cheer similarly won on debut and has since found it tougher, but he has still run consistently enough to suggest he can figure in the places. Sugar Sugar is next best.
