'He's different class to this lot' - David Jennings' best bet on Friday was a 4-1 winner and he's followed up with 11-4 success
David Jennings answers Saturday's burning questions after picking out 25-1 Sprint Cup winner Montassib last weekend . . .
What's the big story?
Where do you start? A stellar showdown between Auguste Rodin and Economics in the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes (3.25) is the highlight of a nine-race marathon at Leopardstown, while the final Classic of the campaign in Britain takes place at Doncaster as a Ballydoyle battalion, spearheaded by favourite Illinois, bids for Betfred St Leger (3.40) glory.
So, who wins the St Leger?
Apologies for being unusually boring, but Illinois. Yes, I know he's favourite and, yes, I know you can make cases for a few of the others, but he seems rock-solid to me.
Sometimes you just have to believe what you hear out of Ballydoyle and it seems to me like Illinois has been the number one for the Donny Classic for yonks. Wayne Lordan was jocked up ages ago and it was a case of finding jockeys for the others. His form is strong and there is nothing wrong with 2-1.
And what about the Irish Champion Stakes?
Stupid question. Economics, of course. He's already blown me away once this season and I suspect he will do something similar here. Am I the only one who thinks 11-8 isn't actually a bad price?
What's the bet of the day?
Cover Up was so close to getting the nod here and 8-1 seems perfectly fair for the Betfred Portland (2.25), but Kinross should be shorter than 9-4 for the Park Stakes (3.00). He is still different class to this lot.
He's got some unfair criticism about not being half as good as he used to be, but being narrowly beaten by Montassib at Newcastle doesn't look so bad now and Goodwood was a mess of a race. Keep the faith. He's still better than these, even at the age of seven.
Who's the lay of the day?
Bubbling is favourite for the opening Ballylinch Stud Irish EBF Ingabelle Stakes (1.10) at Leopardstown, but I fancy Chantez to beat her.
What's the best piece of punting advice for Saturday?
Joseph O'Brien should be your best pal for the concluding three handicaps at Leopardstown.
Comfort Zone should have won the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Petingo Handicap (4.35) last year but the gaps never opened when Declan McDonogh needed them to. That pair could make amends this year off 2lb higher.
Atlantic Coast takes a drop in grade from what he is used to in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Sovereign Path Handicap (5.10), while the make-up of the concluding HKJC World Pool Autumn Fillies & Mares Handicap (5.45) looks right up the street of topweight Star Galaxy.
