A mark of 80 looks workable for Queen Of Soldiers considering she got within a head of the now 109-rated Nahkeel on debut at Ascot. Clearly she has not stepped forward but her latest Ayr third was more encouraging, slightly softer ground should suit and Roger Varian has added blinkers.

James' tip: Relief Rally
Relief Rally still has to prove she has trained on from her classy two-year-old campaign but this looks the right opportunity. She ran on well to finish ahead of Democracy Dilemma last time and is on better terms with that rival here. The cut in the ground should be fine and the likely strong pace to aim at is another plus.

James' tip: Brighton Boy
The ability he displayed in victories at Chester and York suggests Brighton Boy is the one to beat here and the addition of cheekpieces could be crucial. The Andrew Balding-trained colt has not always had his eye fully on the job and the headgear could be the deciding factor, while the ground should be ideal.
2.25 Ascot BetMGM Cumberland Lodge Stakes (Group 3), 1m4f
James' tip: Salt Bay
Testing ground means Al Aasy could be worth taking on but it is a notable plus for Salt Bay. Two of his four runs this season are good enough form to be competitive here and this is the first time he will run without good in the going description this term. He still has potential, having had half the runs of the top three in the betting, and he's been kept fresh since July.
2.40 Newmarket Virgin Bet Sun Chariot Stakes (Group 1), 1m
James' tip: Tamfana
If there is any justice then Tamfana should finally get her day at Newmarket. Five months ago she endured a nightmare passage when fourth in the 1,000 Guineas and was unlucky not to win. She got inches closer to Classic glory in the Prix de Diane before finally getting some compensation with an easy win in the Atalanta Stakes. She brings the best form into the race from this season and will relish conditions.
3.00 Ascot John Guest Racing Bengough Stakes (Group 3), 6f
James’ tip: Jarraaf
This exciting prospect put up an impressive performance when bolting up at the Shergar Cup meeting and deserves his shot at Group 3 level. The Zoustar colt has a pedigree which suggests he will handle underfoot conditions and he clearly enjoys this track. There is not much between a lot of these but he is the one who could take a major leap forward.
3.20 Redcar William Hill Two Year Old Trophy (Listed), 6f
James' tip: Northern Ticker
Billboard Star is the one to beat on form but the soft ground is a slight concern and Northern Ticker could be the one to take him on with. He should relish conditions, having won well with cut in the ground at Carlisle in August, and while the form of his rivals is not too strong he clearly looks a smart prospect.
3.35 Ascot BetMGM Challenge Cup, 7f
James' tip: Qirat
It could be a good weekend for the dam Emulous with Bluestocking bidding for Arc glory but her exciting half-brother Qirat certainly looks the one to beat in Ascot's £180,000 feature. He shaped with major promise when sixth in the Britannia here this season before posting a solid win at Goodwood when he finally got ease in the ground on his last start. That form has been nicely boosted by the runner-up and Qirat should continue to progress.
