Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Southwell
Whizz By
The big freeze is on its way in Britain and it is at this time of year when the all-weather takes centre stage. That is certainly the case on Friday and the best bets come at Southwell, starting with the rapidly improving Whizz By, who can complete a hat-trick in the 7f handicap (6.00).
The lightly raced daughter of New Bay showed little in three outings on turf and Polytrack in the summer, but has looked like a different horse since returning from a break and switching to Tapeta at this course in October by going back-to-back with wins over course and distance.
She made short work of her rivals when scoring by a length and three-quarters on her handicap debut and made light of a 7lb rise in the weights to follow up here last time.
Whizz By won by only a neck and is up another 5lb in the weights on her return from a 52-day break, but has now recorded two consecutive career-best efforts and it is difficult to know where her ceiling may lie. That is especially true back at a course that she clearly likes.
She is a half-sister to smart performers Culturati, Valiant, Whim and Embrace, who had all recorded Racing Post Ratings from 97 to 107, and is therefore bred to be a good deal better than her current BHA rating of 63. It will be disappointing if she can’t resume her progress.
