'Conditions should be perfect for him' - David Jennings answers the big Saturday questions in Britain and Ireland

What's the big story?

The traditional Cambridgeshire cavalry charge at Newmarket (3.40) contains a favourite trained by one of the sharpest minds in the game.

That’s Emmet Mullins, who probably hatched this particular plan for This Songisforyou even before her dam Song Of Hours was covered by Temple City.

The two Group 1s for juveniles also have an overpowering Irish flavour to them as Babouche and Lake Victoria put their polished unbeaten records on the line in the Cheveley Park Stakes (2.25) and Whistlejacket tries to justify odds-on favouritism in the Middle Park (3.00).

So, who wins the Cambridgeshire?

I’ve been banging on about Roi De France for ages, so I can’t jump off that train now, despite the conditions being an unknown. If he handles the ground, I think he’ll win.

That’s a bold statement and plenty needs to go right in a race like the Cambridgeshire, but if he hasn’t got at least half a stone in hand off a mark of 95 I’ve got him badly wrong. He’s a stakes performer in the making.

What’s the bet of the day?

Laugh A Minute has somehow managed to return for the SBK Joe McGrath Premier Handicap (3.10) at the Curragh off a 3lb lower mark than the one he was successful off last year.

He finally gets some cut in the ground and conditions should be perfect for him. You’ll be watching it through your fingers, as he craves cover and needs to arrive on the scene very late, but he might just get there under Gavin Ryan. Odds of 14-1 will do me just fine.

And the lay of the day?

There is no The Lion In Winter in the Goffs Million (3.45) at the Curragh but, even so, Apples And Bananas looks too short and I prefer his stablemate Dante’s Lad at treble the price.

Do Babouche and Whistlejacket both win?

Yes. The double works out just shy of 4-1 and that’s quite attractive.
