2024 Coral Gold Cup tips: 'He has yet to reach his peak over fences' - why this horse can win at Newbury on Saturday
A selection of our tipsters have provided their selection for the Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury on Saturday . . .
Senior Chief
By Stuart Redding
Senior Chief pulled up in the Irish Grand National but has otherwise been progressive and cheekpieces helped him take another step forward at Cheltenham in October.
The seven-year-old travelled powerfully throughout that contest and found plenty to hold off the late challenge of his stablemate The Short Go.
He went up 9lb for that but has yet to reach his peak over fences.
Midnight River
By James Hill
This is as weak a running of the great race as I can remember and I'd therefor give the older horses a better chance than usual.
Midnight River was still going fine when coming down in last year's race. He was well fancied then but is 5lb lower now, and I don't think this will be anything like as intense.
Neon Moon
By Sam Hardy
He is potentially well handicapped off a mark of 136 and finished a respectable third off the same mark at Ascot last time behind Chianti Classico.
Galia Des Liteaux
By Harry Wilson
I thought Galia Des Liteaux ran a cracker on her reappearance in a 2m4f Listed race at Carlisle last month, considering she's better going left-handed, the trip was short of her best and the ground was quick enough.
A 1lb drop for that effort leaves her just 2lb higher than when finishing second Classic Chase at Warwick in January behind My Silver Lining, who franked the form with solid placed efforts in the Grand National Trial and Midlands National.
She's the pick of Harry Skelton, the longer distance should suit her well and any rain that falls will be in her favour.
Broadway Boy
By Charlie Huggins
Rated only 2lb higher than when beating subsequent Ryanair Chase winner Protektorat at this 3m2f trip at Cheltenham in November last year. He has a bit to find with Senior Chief on their meeting last month but Henry de Bromhead likes to target that particular Cheltenham handicap and only Total Recall, for Willie Mullins in 2017, has won this race for Ireland since 1980.
Broadway Boy meets Senior Chief on 10lb better terms and should improve for his first start since running in the Mildmay Novices' Chase in April. He could emulate the last six-year-old to land the Coral Gold Cup, Native River, who ran in that Aintree Grade 1 prior to winning this race in 2016.
