1pt each-waySaturday's Randwick card is billed as the first of two days of The Championships, Sydney's answer to the Breeders' Cup or Qipco Champions Day.

Randwick is generally a very fair track but it is worth watching early races to identify any patterns. The last two weeks at Rosehill favoured horses near the speed and it wouldn't surprise to see horses who got back in those races being able to improve significantly.

With almost an inch of rain expected overnight on rain-softened ground, a soft or heavy track is expected, the rough equivalent of soft going in Britain.

The best bet on the card is the Godolphin-owned Damaged in the opening Group 3 Widden Kindergarten Stakes (2.10).

Damaged debuted with a green second on December 26 at the track and trip, but it was his maiden win upon his return ten days ago that suggests he will be incredibly hard to beat here.

As big as 7-2 on the early books, a price that looks tremendous, if Damaged drifts out even further it only looks more of a gift.

In the fourth race on the card, the Group 3 TAB Adrian Knox Stakes (3.55) for the three-year-olds, it is worth taking a chance on 50-1 hope Toffee Tongue.

A sister to former Hong Kong champion Werther, Toffee Tongue is still a maiden after six starts. However, like her brother who didn't break his maiden until start six, she's taken time to hit her straps and has continued to improve with every run.

She steps beyond 1550m for the first time, which is a massive plus, and should also relish a wet track. Sam Clipperton should give her every chance from gate two and she is sure to give a good sight.

The feature of the card is the Group 1 The Star Doncaster Mile (7.15), and is one of the better punting editions of the race in recent memory with the favourite set to go off around 7-1.

The market looks to have it right with top Kiwi mare Melody Belle at the head of affairs and three-year-old Brandenburg challenging for favouritism.

However, in what appears to be a competitive race, it looks worth playing two horses at bigger odds.

American import Con Te Partiro, who won the Sandringham at Royal Ascot in 2017 under a masterful Jamie Spencer ride, is coming off her biggest career success when winning the Grade 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.

Whether or not she relished the heavy track, her ability to race handy proved crucial under those conditions. She looks to be one of the only horses who will press forward and it wouldn't surprise to see her skipping away up the rise. It's then a case of whether she can be reeled in.

The other who looks a big price is Nettoyer, the beer-swilling mare for the Wendy Roche yard. Nettoyer became a viral sensation after Roche fed her beer after a midfield effort at Flemington during last year's Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Nettoyer has a potent turn of foot on her day. She demonstrated this first-up over course and distance in the Grade 3 Aspiration Quality against the mares.

This is undoubtedly tougher, but her last effort behind Verry Elleegant in the Grade 1 Ranvet Stakes was good and the drop in trip has proven a successful trend in the past decade.
