Simon and Ed Crisford landed the BetMGM Winter Oaks Fillies' Handicap (3.10) last year with a well-backed favourite, but they have muddied the waters this time by having the first two in the betting.

Oh So Grand heads the market after a taking victory from off the pace over course and distance last month, but Twirling was the early market mover once declarations were made, Ryan Moore's mount having opened at 7-1 and dipped under 4-1 in a place by Friday morning.

Moore has a 40 per cent strike-rate for the training partnership (4-10, although it was only 1-12 when Simon held the licence alone), but there's no reason to think Oh So Grand is not the number one as Jack Mitchell has been on board for her two most recent impressive successes.

She really took the eye with the way she powered down the outside last month and is the one to beat off just a 4lb higher mark, but if there is a filly to spoil the Crisfords' party, it is surely Behind The Scenes, who looks a very big price on what she has been doing lately.

Rated 87 when a staying-on second in a mile handicap at Kempton in October, she has twice since been tried in Listed company and has run well, although the handicapper was not that impressed considering she remains on the same mark.

The assessor was probably right to ignore her fourth over a mile at Dundalk as it wasn't the strongest heat, but she wasn't beaten quite as far when a staying-on sixth of 15 upped to just short of this 1m2f trip having been trapped wide all the way at Deauville just before Christmas, and a few of those in front of her had regularly run to RPRs in the 100s. They included fifth-placed Lakota Sioux, who finished just a length and a quarter in front of Behind The Scenes and had run Oh So Grand to the same margin the time before at Lingfield, when conceding the Crisfords' filly 11lb.

The pair were off levels at Deauville and Behind The Scenes receives 2lb from Oh So Grand now, so there is collateral form that gives her a big shout if that is your sort of thing.

The few horses James Tate has run this month have performed well (winner and a close second from four runners), and Behind The Scenes showed enough at Deauville to suggest she will get this trip.

The earlier 5f sprint (2.35) is about as trappy as you can imagine, and it is no surprise to see the bookmakers going 9-2 the field.

Topweight Silky Wilkie was beaten a short head when a 7-4 favourite for this last year and he's 11lb higher now, although you could argue he remains well handicapped on the pick of last season's form.

However, I'm quite keen to give Zarzyni a chance in first-time blinkers after his encouraging third to Diomed Spirit on his return from a four-month break.

The winner is a much younger horse on a five-timer, and there's no reason why he won't confirm the form, but that's why he's favourite, and Zarzyni has definitely become an interestingly handicapped horse.

Admittedly, David and Nicola Barron's seven-year-old has not won the races a horse of his ability should have, but Zarzyni has dropped 13lb in the past year and is obviously chucked in on the best of his form.

This is his first switch of headgear since he won in first-time cheekpieces in April 2022 (ran once last season without any headgear but was tailed off), and he won't need to find much off a career-low mark of 84 to be a factor.

A win record of 3-33 tells you he is not exactly one for the mortgage, but he has hit the first three on all six all-weather starts (no wins), and on four of those occasions he was rated at least 11lb higher than he is now.

He was still capable of running big races last season – beaten only a length off 94 when fourth in the Dash at Epsom on Derby day – and he's getting my each-way support.

My final two bets at Lingfield come before the ITV cameras are due to arrive.

In the 1m4f handicap (1.25) I'm not entirely sure that favourite Amazing is 100 per cent straightforward, and when she was off the mark last time the race sort of fell into her lap with her rivals getting racing a long way out.

She has promise for sure, but so does the lightly raced Orange N Blue, who will surely benefit from Callum Shepherd's stronger handling.

Jane Chapple-Hyam's gelding improved for the step up to 1m4f when fourth on his handicap debut at Southwell despite his inexperienced claimer (0-21) dropping his reins over a furlong out. The handicapper dropped him 2lb for that, which may prove generous in time.

Finally, I'm hopeful the bet of the day comes in the opening 7f handicap (12.15), a run-of-the-mill Class 4 in which Epsom Faithfull makes plenty of appeal.

She has dropped a massive 18lb in the ratings since February last year, and not without good reason, but she came the closest she has to winning for a while when a length third over a mile here 16 days ago on what was her first run for the best part of four months.

If that was a sign she's on the way back to some form – we can't expect her to reach her previous peak at the age of seven – then she is certainly well enough handicapped dropping back to her best all-weather trip.

Epsom Faithfull is 5-16 on artificial surfaces, but that improves to 4-8 over 7f, with three of those successes coming off higher marks than she is on now.
