There were snow showers in the forecast for the Scottish Borders and Kelso had to pass a third inspection on Wednesday morning for the meeting to get the go-ahead. Conditions were perfect with the ground described as good to soft.

The best bet on the card comes in the Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap Hurdle (2.10) where Haveyougotmymoney is an improving horse in the form of his life.

The Paul Robson-trained five-year-old has recorded three consecutive career-best Racing Post Ratings on his last three outings and won well over 3m½f at Southwell in October.

He went up 5lb in the weights and was beaten half a length into second behind the reopposing Jem In Em over course and distance next time, but went through that race like the winner for most of the way, touching 1.02 in running only to then idle, which proved costly.

He was then raised another 3lb and recorded another improved effort when only beaten by the unexposed Call Me Harry at Musselburgh last time, the pair coming nicely clear of the third.

A further 3lb rise in the weights means Haveyougotmymoney will need to improve again, but he continues to take a step forward with each run and can reverse course form with Jem In Em.

The Follow @racingtv On X Novices’ Handicap Chase (1.00) features several promising horses, and the one who catches my eye is Prince Des Fichaux for the in-form Ewan Whillans.

The lightly raced six-year-old took to chasing well for Sam Thomas last season and built on his promising debut third over fences at Hereford in April with a win at Ffos Las next time.

Prince Des Fichaux easily beat subsequent winner Robyndzone on that occasion, sporting first-time cheekpieces, and he looked certain to win more races over fences, so it is no surprise he was picked up for £35,000 by Whillans at the sales in May, especially given he should be reaching his peak now.

He definitely shaped like he was in need of his first run for the Whillans yard when beaten 24 lengths over course and distance 18 days ago. It was his first run for nearly seven months and he travelled nicely before fading in the closing stages.

He has since come down 1lb in the weights and should come on for that run, so I’m expecting him to take a big step forward with that first start for the stable under his belt.

It is a shame all of the six races at Wetherby have fewer than ten runners. Nevertheless, the Visit racingtv.com Handicap Chase (1.50) is an interesting betting race and Phantom Getaway is fancied to build on his first run following wind surgery.

Phantom Getaway went off 9-2 co-favourite on his first run after that operation at Carlisle this month and touched 3.3 in running only to weaken quickly out of contention up the straight.

He still showed plenty of promise on that chase debut and jumped soundly, so it was a good start to his career over fences in what was a significantly more competitive race than this one.

The selection has now dropped to the same mark as when last successful, in a 3m handicap hurdle at Ffos Las last November, and there is no reason he should not be capable of winning off this rating over fences. The way he jumped last time suggests he will be a better chaser.

Trainer Kim Bailey has a 44 per cent strike-rate (8-18) in the last fortnight and the red-hot trainer has booked Jonathan Burke to ride. The pair are 2-17 when teaming up in the last five seasons and a further two runners finished second and two third. That is evidently a big positive.
