Well done to all involved in rescheduling Exeter's card. Cheltenham aside, it is my favourite track to punt on, although conditions are set to be pretty gruelling.

That should work in favour of the Harriet Dickin-trained Williamdeconqueror, who bids for a first win in the Trusham Novices' Handicap Chase (12.50). He has to take on the hat-trick-seeking Percy Veering but that rival is up 13lb from his initial winning mark and may not want really deep ground, so is worth taking on.

Williamdeconqueror seems to relish plenty of cut underfoot, as he displayed when a good second at Lingfield 29 days ago. In his trademark fashion, he gave Lorcan Murtagh plenty to do to maintain his position before finishing with a flourish to get within a short head of the winner. Everything about that run suggested the greater emphasis on stamina at Exeter would suit better.

His three runs since being fitted with cheekpieces have yielded career-bests and he is up only 2lb from that narrow defeat last time. Dickin moved stables to Somerset last month and, while yet to have a winner, she sent out a good second in a Hereford bumper at the end of November. This can be her breakthrough winner.

Sky Bet are offering five places in the Higher Ashton Handicap Hurdle (2.20) and the value could be Saintemilion for local trainer Jimmy Frost.

He hasn't gone close in nearly four years, since finishing second over fences at Wincanton on Boxing Day in 2019 when trained by Paul Nicholls, but that was also the last time he raced on testing ground. Having struggled in six runs after that neck defeat off a mark of 121, he now finds himself on a rating of 89 and, for the first time in a while, in a race where he should be competitive and on ground he handles well.

Saintemilion has been with Jimmy Frost for a few years but missed a whole season before two fairly moderate runs at Exeter last spring, finishing last of six in March and down the field again the following month. The ground was quick enough then and those runs were in much hotter company, with only two of his 17 rivals rated lower than 100. Here the topweight is rated 98, so the ten-year-old should find this considerably easier.

Frost pulled off a 28-1 winner here with Asian Spice last month and Saintemilion could go well at a price if primed for his seasonal comeback.

Dark Duomo was trained in the south-west but is now with Micky Hammond and looks an interesting each-way contender in the Paxtons No1 Case/IH Dealer For UK & ROI Handicap Chase (1.45) at Hexham.

The five-year-old is switched to chasing and upped in trip after a fairly shocking debut where he fell at the second and injured jockey Emma Smith-Chaston. Going back to his previous start at Warwick in March for Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, he looked a thorough stayer in the making when keeping on best to pinch second from tired horses in gruelling conditions in a 3m2f handicap hurdle.

The stamina test at Hexham should suit well and he has the profile to be a possible improver over fences.

Benny Silver is the best bet of the day in Leicester's William Hill Play Responsibly Novices' Handicap Chase (2.35) over 2m.

This represents a complete change of tactics from the Nigel Twiston-Davies team after three decent placed efforts on good ground and over further, the first two of which were over hurdles. On those occasions he was ridden prominently and picked off late by the winner, but last time at Hereford he was placed in midfield and was the one looking to do the pouncing.

He challenged approaching the last but got too close to it and lost all momentum before running on again in third. Bar the last, it was a good round of jumping and he took well to more patient tactics. He'll be dangerous again off the same mark.
