Tyrrhenian Sea
1.54 Lingfield
1pt win

Thedevilscoachman
2.15 Punchestown
1pt win

Harry Alonzo
2.45 Punchestown
1pt win

The best racing over jumps on Sunday comes at Punchestown and the 2m3f hurdle (2.15) features some old favourites, with Andy Dufresne, Sir Gerhard and Vanillier in the line-up.

Sir Gerhard will probably head the market on his return to hurdles. He never looked a natural over fences and his fall behind Dinoblue at Naas last month confirmed that impression. He has a chance, but he will be a short price and I prefer another runner last seen over fences.

Thedevilscoachman has won four of his six starts over hurdles and his best effort came when he beat one of these rivals, Ashdale Bob, in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan last year. He won three times over fences last season, but that hurdle win remains his highest Racing Post Rating and that is enough to convince me that he will be well suited by going back hurdling.

He won a Listed novice hurdle at Punchestown in 2021, so he has course form, and he didn’t run badly when seventh of 20 in the Troytown over fences at Navan last month. He did incredibly well to beat anything home then considering he jumped poorly, and he clearly has lots of ability.

The drop back to in trip and return hurdling looks certain to suit Thedevilscoachman and with improvement expected following that first run in 223 days, he rates a solid bet.

Thedevilscoachman represents owner JP McManus, trainer Noel Meade and jockey Mark Walsh, and they could strike again in the 2m3f handicap hurdle (2.45) with Harry Alonzo

His best effort in bumpers came when beaten only a length and a half into second by the now 138-rated Letsbeclearaboutit at Fairyhouse in April 2021 and a literal interpretation of that form would put Harry Alonzo on an attractive mark, off 118, for this handicap hurdle debut.

He failed to replicate that form over hurdles later that year, but still recorded some solid efforts in defeat, including when fourth of 21 at Navan when last seen in December 2021.

Harry Alonzo now returns from 743 days off the course, but he is open to plenty of improvement on his fourth hurdles start, especially now upped three furlongs in trip.

The return to softer ground also promises to suit this French-bred son of Montmartre and everything looks in place for a winning reappearance, with Walsh riding full of confidence.

The wet weather has taken its toll on the jump racing in Britain and an all-hurdles card at Warwick doesn’t interest me. It might pay to look to the all-weather at Lingfield instead and the best bet on the card comes in the 1m2f Listed race (1.54), where Tyrrhenian Sea appeals.

He has three wins and three seconds from eight runs on sand and while he has yet to register his first victory at this track, he has recorded his two highest RPRs over course and distance.

Tyrrhenian Sea was beaten only three and a quarter lengths behind Lord North, who won a Group 1 at Meydan next time, on his first start at this track in the Winter Derby in February and was an eyecatcher when second in the Churchill Stakes over course and distance last month.

He dwelt at the start that day and came from last to lose out to Blue Trail by only a head, and the front two put a length and a quarter back to the rest of the field in the dying strides.

Tyrrhenian Sea clearly loves it at this track and with the in-form Roger Varian having had five winners from 15 runners in the last fortnight, he is a confident selection.
