The old adage horses for courses rings especially true at Fakenham, where it usually pays to follow those who have shown an aptitude for the track as not every runner takes to it.

I've also found it imperative to find one who stays the distance really well. That might seem slightly counterintuitive considering the tight nature of the track, but runners tend to go at a good clip and many can fall in a hole in the closing stages.

Finding a sound jumper is also key, as the field can quickly get away from you in between obstacles after a mistake – sloppy jumping puts paid to any real chance of getting involved at the finish.

With all that considered, the first selection at the course comes in the 2m5f mares' handicap chase (12.40), in which Lincoln Lyn holds strong claims of notching a second victory over fences.

It took her 11 runs to get off the mark under rules but she did so in emphatic style with a dominant 19-length success in a mares' handicap hurdle at Southwell in May last year.

She followed that up with a good effort over fences back at that track after a 189-day break in November before taking to Fakenham like a duck to water in January, cruising into contention from the rear of the field and pulling away after the last.

What really caught the eye that day was her efficient jumping, and she continued to close on the leaders despite receiving a huge bump in the air with four fences to go. She beat a really strong stayer over this course and distance that day and makes her first start at the track since off a 1lb lower mark.

Her reappearance on soft enough ground over a trip short of her best at Ffos Las last month should have put her spot on for this and she gets the services of jockeys' title-race leader Sean Bowen for the first time. Everything looks set for a great run.

My other selection at the Norfolk venue is Wake Up Early, who should relish the drop in grade in the 3m5f handicap chase (1.40).

He hasn't quite shown the same form since finishing a close third in the Norfolk National over this course and distance in May, but all those runs came in Class 3 handicaps, while he can be forgiven for being pulled up on heavy ground last time given all his best form is on a quicker surface.

He is unbeaten in Class 4 handicap chases, winning a 3m3f contest at Sedgefield in March and also at Market Rasen in May last year, and this is the first time he has tackled that company since.

He arrives on a 3lb lower mark than his last success and has winning form over this course and distance, so he should leave a string of below-par efforts firmly behind him.

Other jumping action comes from Catterick and Wincanton, where the opening 3m1f handicap chase (12.20) looks the perfect opportunity for My Lady Grey to get back to winning ways.

She was off for a long time after finishing last of four at Fontwell in September last year, but she returned from a 415-day layoff with a very respectable fifth over hurdles back at that course and should strip fitter for the run.

She was up against it over an inadequate trip and on unfavourably heavy ground – all five wins have been on good going – so it was encouraging to see her travel so well for such a long way before being outpaced when the leaders quickened.

That screamed of being a pipe-opener, and given her last three wins have been achieved in Class 5 3m2f handicap chases, the latest off a 7lb higher mark, this looks the ideal scenario for her and she looks well handicapped to boot.

My final offering of the day comes on the evening all-weather card at Wolverhampton, where it will be disappointing if Maharajas Express can't build on a promising first run for Jack Jones in the 5f handicap (7.00).

Jones has had plenty of success with recruits from other yards this season and having lost his way for Richard Spencer, Maharajas Express seemed to relish the drop in trip to 6f when a close second at Lingfield two weeks ago.

He showed a decent change of gear to lead with a furlong to go before succumbing late on and this free-going sort might just improve further now dropped to the minimum trip. He has the look of a seriously well-treated sprinter.
