Some of the best staying novices in Ireland are set to do battle in the Neville Hotels Novice Chase (1.45) at Leopardstown, so we should learn plenty.

The form horse as things stand is Favori De Champdou, who is only third favourite in the early betting despite thumping second favourite Flooring Porter by 15 and a quarter lengths when they were first and third in the Florida Pearl at Punchestown last month.

We saw enough there, however, to assume Flooring Porter will not be sent chasing on a right-handed track again, and Leopardstown, where he has won and been placed in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle at this meeting, is going to be much more his bag.

This time we don't know that about Favori De Champdou, who despite having run 11 times under rules has gone left-handed only when pulling up as a 12-1 shot in last season's Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham.

Corbetts Cross ran out there but he is favourite for this having improved from his novicey first outing at Naas to beat Three Card Brag at Fairyhouse nearly a month ago.

Just how strong that form will turn out to be remains to be seen, and Corbetts Cross does have the best part of ten lengths to find with Grangeclare West, who won that Naas race in comfortable fashion.

Having raced just six times under rules, Grangeclare West has obviously had his problems, but having been found wanting in Grade 1 company over hurdles last winter, he signed off his campaign with a career-best effort at Punchestown, and he looked like a horse transformed by fences when returning at Naas.

He certainly jumped a lot better than Corbetts Cross as he ran out a cosy winner there, and would probably have been an even more commanding scorer if the two fences in the home straight were not omitted both times.

Grangeclare West could turn into a Grade 1 chaser for Willie Mullins this season and he appeals as the value bet.

Mullins has won six of the last seven runnings of the Grade 3 BeattheBank.ie Irish EBF Mares Hurdle (1.10), but despite saddling four runners he doesn't have any of the first three in the early betting.

It is easy enough to make cases for that trio – Magical Zoe, Jetara and Hispanic Moon – but I thought the Mullins-trained Risk Belle looked a much-improved performer on her return to action this month and she's worth chancing despite picking up a 3lb penalty for that Grade 3 success at Fairyhouse.

A close third in the Boodles in March, Risk Belle could manage only sixth when upped in trip in a big handicap hurdle at Punchestown in April, but she did find herself in all sorts of trouble on the run to the last and then made a hash of it, so I'd be inclined to forgive that, and she's certainly bred to stay well enough.

There's a competitive Listed mares' chase at Doncaster (1.40) with a worthy favourite in the Irish raider Limerick Lace, who was last seen finishing second in the Troytown.

Gavin Cromwell can do little wrong when bringing horses to Britain lately and she's the one to beat, but Zambella is pretty lethal in this sort of race and may be the one with the most speed.

A winner of nine of her 18 chase starts, she thrashed the subsequent Tommy Whittle runner-up Burrows Diamond by 17 lengths on her return at Aintree, and she has won this race by a wide margin for the last two years.

She was beaten by Fantastic Lady at Market Rasen last season, but that was at 3m, and she should hold all the aces back at this trip.

Earlier on the card Onemorefortheroad ought to take all the beating in the 2m½f handicap chase (1.05).

The Neil King-trained eight-year-old seemingly lost his way over hurdles, falling 15lb from his peak rating over the last season and a half, but it's fair to say he loved the switch to fences as he ran his rivals ragged over this course and distance just under two weeks ago.

A 7lb rise for that is fair enough and still leaves him 8lb short of his best hurdles rating, and the way he won last time suggests he'll be back up to that level and perhaps beyond soon enough.
