Shadwell Stud launch new breeding scholarship programme
Shadwell Stud has announced the launch of a new educational scholarship programme that will promote employment and careers in the thoroughbred breeding industry, and will be run in conjunction with Writtle University College (WUC) in Essex.
The scholarships offer an entry point into the stud sector, with Shadwell covering the cost of the tuition and accommodation fees for up to four students during their one-year period of study at WUC.
Recipients will be studying WUC’s recently validated, one-year Certificate of Higher Education in Thoroughbred Stud Operations. The course incorporates a significant period of work experience based on a partner stud.
After graduation, scholarship students will complete a further year at Shadwell. As well as stud exposure, this opportunity will offer students a grounding in the production of racehorses, including six months in Shadwell's breaking, pre-training and rehabilitation centre.
James O’Donnell, assistant stud director at Shadwell Stud, said: “We are extremely encouraged by the Thoroughbred Stud Operations course that Writtle University College have launched. We feel it's an important and timely initiative and we are excited to be working with them. This course will complement the existing educational relationships we have within the industry.
“WUC have some fantastic facilities and the course syllabus will give the students the skills needed to make a positive contribution to the thoroughbred breeding industry, from the moment they enter
their placement studs. We look forward to welcoming WUC students to Shadwell at the end of this year.”
Richard Lancaster, Shadwell Stud director, said: “It is so encouraging to see this initiative from Writtle University College. At a time when the industry is short of staff this course will give young people an opportunity to understand and develop the skills needed for a career in this wonderful industry.”
Caroline Flanagan, WUC’s Head of School for Equine and Veterinary Physiotherapy, added: “Writtle University College are thrilled that Shadwell Stud have launched this scholarship initiative to support
keen entrants to the stud industry.
“Shadwell have been an incredibly supportive partner during the development of our Thoroughbred Stud Operations award and this scholarship should ensure that capable candidates are fully
supported during the early years of what can be an exceptionally rewarding career.
“We very much look forward to working with the scholars and Shadwell during the next few years and following the progress of these students as they work with some of the highest quality
racehorses in the UK. Shadwell are committed to providing this exceptional scholarship to some very lucky students; recipients of these awards will be receiving an amazing opportunity.”
To apply for the Shadwell Scholarship, candidates must send an expression of interest to TBSO@writtle.ac.uk. Students who have already applied to WUC for 2019 entry on this course are welcome to put themselves forward.
Assessment will be based upon an application letter, a CV and an interview. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate equine experience and hold a minimum of 48 UCAS Tariff Points.
Scholarship Applications will close by 12 July 2019. Applications for September 2019 entry to WUC’s Certificate of Higher Education in Thoroughbred Stud Operations must be submitted via UCAS.
