Toronado continues his good week as Clement strikes for Hestia Farm's filly at Arqana
For the second straight day at the Arqana October Yearling Sale it was a daughter of Toronado who shone, with Hestia Farm's filly from the family of Accakaba and Sendawar topping the first of two sessions which form the final part of the catalogue.
Nicolas Clement signed at €50,000 for the filly (lot 535), who is set to represent his new syndicate run in conjunction with John Hammond and Racing France.
Hestia Farm is a new stud set up by former Haras de Montaigu operations manager Sebastien Defontaine, which made its debut consigning yearlings with a €55,000 colt by Armor here in August.
Clement was taken with the filly both on her physique and by the presence as maternal granddam of a Group 1-winning sire whose career he guided.
"I loved the filly in the first place because she has Stormy River in the recent generations of her pedigree," said Clement. "She comes from a good Wertheimer family and is out of a winning Iffraaj mare who was rated 40 or 42 here.
"I think she’ll make up into a two-year-old and Toronado was a super racehorse who gets winners as a sire."
Ulysses filly produces fine return for Haras d'Haspel
Jose Delmotte has made an excellent habit of picking up well-bred siblings from some of the major British-base owner-breeders, none more so than when acquiring Needleleaf from the Juddmonte draft in Newmarket.
Delmotte's Haras d'Haspel then bred Native Trail from the daughter of Observatory and, although he was sold as a foal and ended up making money for others, the farm has recouped their money several times over, with yearling sales by Needleleaf realising €950,000 and €550,000.
Haspel purchased Cheveley Park's Verandah at Tattersalls for 23,000gns in 2022 when she was in foal to the farm's resident stallion Ulysses.
Meridian International landed Verandah's Ulysses filly (536) for €45,000, and Delmotte will be hopeful she can perform on the track to the extent that her future siblings are promoted to earlier in the October sale or to August. By Medicean, Verandah is a full-sister to Dimension and a half to Spacious, who was second in Natagora's 1,000 Guineas.
"She’s been bought for BS Racing and will go into training with Francois Rohaut," said Meridian's Emeric Guetin. "She’s a beautiful filly and [owner] Carsten Baagoe’s son studied her pedigree in depth, he’s a real enthusiast.
"Her dam was injured during her second start but she had a lot of quality. She’s beautifully bred and stood out today."
A daughter of Dabirsim heads to Japan
Headed by Yoshito Yahagi, Japanese buyers have become an important part of the buying bench here in August, but it is rarer to see representation in October and much less during Part 3.
A trip was made worthwhile when a daughter of Dabirsim presented by Haras de Grandcamp was sold to race there for €42,000.
The filly (561) is out of Almahroosa, the Green Tune dam of six winners and a granddaughter of the talented racemare and producer Capo Di Monte.
She will be trained by Miho-based Masahiro Takeuchi, who enjoyed a Graded stakes breakthrough last month when Shinryokuka landed the Niigata Kinen.
A stable representative said: "The trainer was interested in buying horses in Europe and so last year we bought at Tattersalls and this year we have come here. It was his choice to buy this filly, who has a pedigree that could work in Japan thanks to Dabirsim being by Hat Trick, himself a son of Sunday Silence."
The sale concludes on Saturday when 160 lots are catalogued, starting at 11am local time.
