Dedication to the cause takes many different forms. Athletes spend long hours in the gym fine-tuning their bodies to achieve peak physical performance. Artists can spend a lifetime honing their craft. And sales correspondents forego their wife’s birthday to attend the Goffs Orby Sale. Or at least this one does. 

“You had better at least mention that it was my birthday in your diary,” she said as I dashed for the airport late on Monday morning. There you go, darling. Your wish is my command. If there is no Tattersalls October installment of this column you can assume this intro didn’t go down well at home.
