Magnier laments loss of Scat Daddy after landing €700,000 No Nay Never filly

The growing momentum behind flying freshman sire No Nay Never made an impact on trade at Goffs on Tuesday, as Coolmore's MV Magnier went to €700,000 to secure a filly from the son of Scat Daddy's second crop.

Agents Shawn Dugan and Kerri Radcliffe, both positioned on the upper tier of the auditorium, drove the filly's price up from an opening bid of €100,000, and when Andrew Nolan's gavel came up at €650,000 it seemed as though Dugan would prevail.

However, before the hammer came down Magnier, standing to the right of the rostrum, stepped in with a €50,000 raise to take the price to €700,000 and ultimately land the spoils.

"She's an absolute beauty and No Nay Never is flying, which is a great sign for sons of Scat Daddy," said Magnier.

"We've got good chances with him, Caravaggio and, thankfully, we now have Justify too. It's an exciting time; Scat Daddy is a big loss but we believe we have a great bunch of his sons now so hopefully they can keep going the way No Nay Never is."

Not only is the filly by the sire of the moment, but she also boasted a sizeable update as a half-sister to Raakib Alhawa, winner of the Haynes, Hanson and Clark Conditions Stakes on debut last month.

The filly, bred by the Weld family's Springbank Way Stud out of the winning Sea The Stars mare Starlet, provided Ciaran 'Flash' Conroy's Glenvale Stud with a hefty return on the €52,000 she had cost at last year's Goffs November Foal Sale.

"We were just very lucky to have her," said Conroy. "She took her work extremely well and was very easy all the way through. A very straightforward filly, a very good individual and of course, there was the update too. Those animals are very hard to get and we were lucky to have her."

The consignor, who has had a number of No Nay Never's progeny through his hands, also had a positive word for son of Scat Daddy, saying: "They're tough, hardy horses. They're forward going types who enjoy their work, so you can understand how he's doing so well."

The filly's second dam, the Listed-placed Treasure The Lady, is a half-sister to the great High Chaparral, who carried the Coolmore colours to success in five top-flight events, including the Derby and back-to-back renewals of the Breeders' Cup Turf.

Coolmore have already reaped rich rewards from the stunning start No Nay Never has made at stud, having landed Saturday's Middle Park Stakes with his unbeaten son Ten Sovereigns, who heads the stallion's 22 European winners.
