Humour and histrionics as I go through the looking glass at a Book 1 for the ages
Sales correspondent James Thomas recounts a barnstorming three days of selling at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale

Describing Book 1 as not your average yearling sale is a bit like saying Messi isn’t your average footballer. Or the Millennium Falcon isn’t your regular mode of transport. It’s a different animal altogether.
This is where the big beasts – four-legged and two-legged – come to flex. Consequently, attempting to preview the event can feel like a bit of a thankless task. How do you do justice to a catalogue in which one in every ten lots is a sibling to a Group 1 winner? I spent Monday patrolling the Park Paddocks grounds in search of inspiration.
