Godolphin's powerhouse draft of fillies and mares has been split up across the catalogue with the first selection due in the ring shortly.

Among the early lots that catch the eye are:

The Royal Studs sent a trio of horses to Newmarket including mother and daughter Make Fast and Works Of Art. Make Fast, an 11-year-old daughter of Makfi, is already the dam of Tactical, winner of the Group 2 Superlative Stakes for Queen Elizabeth II. Listed-placed for the late Queen, she is the dam of three winners from four runners and was sold in foal to champion two-year-old and Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Native Trail for 95,000gns to Yeomanstown Stud.

Her three-year-old Zoffany filly Works Of Art outdid her in the bidding stakes, making 100,000gns to John Foley of GHS. Works Of Art was trained by Andrew Balding and came second in the Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar for King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The final offering from The Royal Studs was Shepherd's Delight, an unraced two-year-old Time Test half-sister to this year's Group 1 Sydney Cup winner Circle Of Fire and she was knocked down to Michael Swinburn of Genesis Green Stud.

The top ten broodmare sires in Europe as of this morning, in order of stakes winners, are:

  • Galileo
  • Pivotal
  • Dansili
  • Dubawi
  • Oasis Dream
  • Invincible Spirit
  • Sea The Stars
  • Shamardal
  • Teofilo
  • Danehill Dancer

As you would expect they are well-represented amongst the fillies and mares in this catalogue.

Galileo, with 41 individual European stakes winners, has almost three times as many this season as former champion broodmare sire Pivotal, with Cartier Horse of the Year City Of Troy the standout.

Daughters of Galileo selling today include Frill (1375), a half-sister to Group 1 winner Garswood, So Beautiful (1403) out of Queen Mary winner Acapulco, Yamato Nadeshiko (1412) a full-sister to Lancaster House and Mean Machine (1417), an unraced full-sister to Group 1 winners Ballydoyle and Misty For Me, dam of Group 1 winners US Navy Flag and Roly Poly.

All four mares are offered in foal to Wootton Bassett.

The first consignment from Shadwell is in the ring and has provided us with the first spark of six-figure excitement this morning. Mawayed, a three-year-old daughter of Sea The Stars has just sold for 125,000gns to Tally Ho Stud.

Trained by Marcus Tregoning, she has run three times this year without being placed but is a half-sister to the Group 2 winner Madhmoon, who was runner-up to Anthony Van Dyck in the 2019 Derby and is at stud at Haras du Saz.

Her dam Aaraas is a Group 3-placed Haafhd half-sister to Asheerah, the Listed-placed dam of Shadwell's Irish 2,000 Guineas winner and excellent sire Awtaad.

In terms of what to expect later today, the biggest names in the global bloodstock industry are all at Newmarket and looking to add the best of European fillies and mares to their aristocratic broodmare bands.

At previous elite sales here in Tattersalls - last Friday's foal session and Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale - the global players have all been represented in the sales ring battles that have lit up Park Paddocks with Kia Joorabchian's heavy investment in stock driving prices

Spotted around the grounds over the weekend on their inspections were representatives of Coolmore, Darley, Juddmonte, Yulong Investments, Northern Farm and Shadwell amongst others.

The players are in position.
