Flightline, Cody's Wish and dispersals among interesting aspects of Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale
Keeneland’s 81st November Breeding Stock Sale begins on Tuesday with the prestigious Book 1.
The sale features mares in foal to prominent stallions and popular young sires, weanlings by those same sires, and talented race fillies who are now broodmare prospects.
The catalogue contained 3,385 horses, to be sold across nine sessions up to and including Wednesday week. Among those pages are the first mares in foal to 2023 Horse of the Year Cody’s Wish, the first weanlings by 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline, and a variety of dispersals.
Those riches include stock from the estate of John Hendrickson, which Gainesway is handling. This comprises 12 broodmares and seven weanlings owned by the late Hendrickson.
Stuart Janney is dispersing his breeding stock, with Claiborne Farm overseeing the consignment of 13 broodmares and two broodmare prospects.
Taylor Made Sales Agency is handling the dispersal of Siena Farm’s breeding stock of 31 broodmares and one broodmare prospect.
Taylor Made is sharing with Lane’s End responsibilities relating to the complete dispersal of Ed Seltzer’s Solera Farm. The draft has 23 broodmares, 14 weanlings, six broodmare prospects, two racing or broodmare prospects, and one stallion.
Taylor Made also consigns Shotgun Hottie (220), a six-time winner, including at Grade 3 level, for Cherie DeVaux, who on Saturday saddled a debut Breeders' Cup winner when More Than Looks won the Mile.
The trainer said of the first millionaire daughter of Gun Runner to be offered at public auction: “She’s going to be a great addition to anyone’s broodmare band. To have her résumé, to have her earnings, to have her physical offered is a very exciting time.”
In a recent round of supplements, Keeneland added broodmare prospect Beyond Oscar, a three-year-old half-sister to Horse of the Year Bricks And Mortar, as hip 254 to Book 1 of the Breeding Stock Sale.
Consigned by Bluewater Sales, Beyond Oscar is a daughter of Oscar Performance out of Broodmare of the Year Beyond The Waves, by Ocean Crest.
She is from the family of Grade 1 winner Bordonaro and Grade 1-placed stakes winner Miss Empire.
Book 1 commences at 1pm local time (6pm GMT), for which 254 hips were originally listed.
Book 2 is on Wednesday and Thursday, with Books 3, 4 and 5 also allotted two days apiece. Each of those sessions begins at 10am local time.
The standalone November Horses of Racing Age Sale will be held from midday local time on Thursday, November 14.
Three-year-old Cornell (4096), a son of Into Mischief trained by Bob Baffert, has won twice at Santa Anita and could be of interest to Middle Eastern buyers.
The latest round of supplements to that auction featured Just A Coed (4222), a three-year-old daughter of Justify from the family of champions Forte, Folklore and Essential Quality, as well as Japanese Triple Crown winner Contrail.
Consigned by Hidden Brook and catalogued as a racing or broodmare prospect, she is out of stakes winner Student Body, by Colonel John, and also from the family of Grade 3 winner Jeano.
Another supplement was Tactical Joke (4223), a four-year-old filly by Practical Joke, to be consigned by Taylor Made. From the family of Grade 1 winner Sailor’s Valentine and a half-sister to Grade 3-placed winners Desert Dynamo and Ambusher, she is out of the Dixie Union mare Competition.
Lagynos (4224), a three-year-old Grade 2-placed winning colt by Kantharos, was also added. Consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, he is out of Steamy, by Speightstown, and is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Vision Perfect.
