Blue Bresil dominated the second and final day of the Goffs UK August Sale, with his son out of a winning daughter of the great Lady Rebecca topping trade at £44,000 when knocked down to Paul Cashman of Rathbarry and Glenview Studs.

Consigned by Trickledown Stud, the May-born yearling colt is the second foal from the Midnight Legend mare Mary Eleanor, a winner over hurdles for Tom Lacey and the final foal out of David Redvers’ hugely popular three-time Cleeve Hurdle scorer.

The plan for the son of the County Cork operation’s stalwart is to return to the sales ring in a couple of years' time.

Cashman said: “We bought him for resale, he’s a lovely, athletic colt. Midnight Legend is an excellent broodmare sire and he’s a lovely physical with great action.

“He has great presence and, for me, was a bit of a standout. He’ll be castrated and the plan is to resell him as a three-year-old.”

Mary Eleanor is a half-sister to three further winners, including the Listed bumper scorer Lord Generous, a three-time winner for Nicky Henderson, the dual hurdles winner Lady Karina and Lady Samantha, dam of the five-time hurdle and chase victor Before Midnight.

Blue Bresil is responsible for the likes of Grade 1 Ryanair Hurdle winner Mick Jazz, last season’s impressive Peter Marsh Chase victor Royale Pagaille and Grand Annual winner Le Prezien.

Another son of the Grade 1-winning sire, out of the well-related Shalltoo, sold to Pine Tree for £42,000.

The March-born yearling, consigned by Mill House Stud, is the first foal out of the half-sister to Grade 1 Cathal Ryan Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle winner Dedigout and is also from the family of the high-class hurdler Winning Nora.

Blue Bresil was responsible for half of the top six lots, while overall 140 sold from 199 offered, for a clearance rate of 70 per cent, turnover of £1,290,200, an average of £9,216 and median of £6,250.

Authorized love-in for Greatrex

Highflyer Bloodstock’s Tessa Greatrex signed the docket for two Authorized fillies, including a three-year-old from the family of Group 2 winner Loup Breton for £42,000.

With stock of the 2007 Derby winner in limited supply due to his relocation to Turkey at the end of 2019, buyers had only four opportunities to get their hands on horses in training and stores by the sire of dual Grand National winner Tiger Roll and Stayers’ Hurdle hero Nichols Canyon.

Bred by Ashbrittle Stud, the Trickledown Stud-consigned filly is the fourth foal out of Giant’s Causeway mare Lupa Montana, who in turn is out of the multiple Graded-placed Louve Royale, a half-sister to Prix d’Harcourt and San Marcos Stakes winner Loup Breton.

Greatrex said: “We bought pretty much every Authorized who went through the store sales this spring, so we’re continuing the trend.

“Both of them are cracking individuals and Authorizeds are limited editions now; he’s such a fantastic stallion. The filly out of Lupa Montana has plenty of size and scope and is a lovely individual.”

Apple Tree's Jack Hobbs stars

One of the standout individuals pre-sale was Apple Tree Stud's Jack Hobbs yearling gelding out of The Pirate's Queen and he did not disappoint, selling to Brian Ellison for £40,000.

The bay is the fourth foal out of the Listed-winning hurdler, a King's Theatre full-sister to Grade 2 Peter Marsh Chase winner The Dutchman and Katie Too, a Listed winner and second in the Grade 2 Jane Seymour Mares' Novices' Hurdle.

Doyen a top result for Mill House

Mill House Stud came to the fore again when the Doyen yearling half-brother to a six-figure point-to-pointer made £34,000 to Mags O'Toole.

Owned by Earlside Farm, the gelding is out of Moscow Society mare Bling Noir, a half-sister to Topham Chase runner-up Katnap and Greenmount Park Novice Chase second Snooze, and from the family of fellow black-type performers Fairwood Present and Resolute Bay.

His Kayf Tara half-brother Tango Tara, a two-length winner of a Ballindenisk four-year-old maiden point for Mary Doyle last November, made £120,000 from Baltimore House Stables to Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls at the Goffs UK December PTP Sale.

The stud's Juliet Minton said: “We had him in January but then the sale was cancelled, so he went home and then came back to us. The delay has helped him, he was all legs as a foal.”

Statement

Goffs UK managing director Tim Kent said: “Today has capped off a good two days of selling and it’s great to see a successful National Hunt yearling session following all the issues we faced earlier in the year.

"We made the decision to hold the sale on the revised date after consultation with the UK breeders who had to hold on to these horses for a lot longer than planned, so we are very grateful that everyone has been so accommodating and helped to make today such a huge success."

He added: “A big positive for everyone has been the ability to host a sale with limited Covid restrictions, which is something that we have all been looking forward to for some time. The sale also hosted the Goffs UK-sponsored TBA NH Breeders’ Awards last night, which was moved from its traditional May date, again due to Covid restrictions, and to be able to celebrate that with the largest audience in the event’s history was superb.

"The two days have certainly felt far more normal and it bodes well for our Premier and Silver Yearling Sales, which are now just under three weeks away.”
