Tony Morris looks at those who have excelled in Europe this year
The 47th season of the European Pattern was scheduled to comprise 417 races, the highest on record. In fact, four events were lost – the Group 3 Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr for waterlogging, and the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, Group 1 Criterium International and Group 3 Prix Perth because of a demonstration on the course.
Sunday’s Premio Roma, originally set for November 5, when the ground at the Capannelle was ruled unsafe, thus rounded off a campaign that consisted of 413 races, the same as in 2016. The distribution was slightly different, with 81 in Group 1, 110 in Group 2 and 222 in Group 3, while the tally of individual winners – 310 – was down by nine.
The tallies for each participating nation were: Great Britain 152, France 111, Ireland 70, Germany 44, Italy 26, Norway, Sweden and Turkey three apiece, and Denmark with one.
