Enable shows you can't go to the Wells too often
Nathaniel contributing to the growing impact of inbreeding to Sadler's Wells
It would be interesting to gauge how many breeders have considered inbreeding to Sadler's Wells. Galileo's dominance, extended by various sons now emerging alongside other branches of the Sadler's Wells line, means that inbreeding to the great stallion is inevitably going to become more noticeable with time. But the fact is that closely doubling up on a horse renowned for middle-distance excellence would not have appealed to everyone.
In fairness, the early results weren't exactly inspiring. Kamsin, the 2008 German Derby winner, was one of the first notable runners to carry a double dose of Sadler's Wells (via Old Vic, the damsire of his sire Samum; and his own damsire Winged Love, by In The Wings). But the next flagship European horse didn't arrive until 2012 when Jim Bolger unleashed his homebred Teofilo colt Parish Hall, his sire's very first winner and subsequently successful in the Dewhurst Stakes.
Indeed, a sizeable share of any early success came via the Kentucky stallion Kitten's Joy, by El Prado out of a Lear Fan mare. Ken and Sarah Ramsey weren't afraid to inbreed back to either Sadler's Wells or Roberto while developing their homebred into a heavyweight among American turf stallions. Four of his 34 Group or Graded stakes winners to date are inbred in some way to Sadler's Wells; two, Divisidero and Kitten's Dumplings, are Grade 1 winners.
