Who bought what on day one of Arqana's Select Yearling Sale in Deauville
While the €620,000 Dubawi filly sold to Godolphin may have captured the headlines on day one of the Select Sale, there were plenty of other noteworthy buys on Wednesday. Here is a run down of the session's other eye-catching sales.
Lot 36
b f Shalaa - Brasileira (Dubai Destination)
Consigned by Haras des Sablonnets
Bought by Frederic Sauque for €300,000
"I bought her for a new client, she’s a first thoroughbred for the client," said Sauque. "Her sister, Bolleville, will run in a Group 2 [Sunday's Blandford Stakes]."
Lot 54
b f Galileo - Come To Heel (Elnadim)
Haras des Capucines
Hubert Guy for €250,000
"She is a lovely filly who walks very well and is very athletic," said Guy. "On my first visit she didn’t really take my eye but every time I looked at the Capucines horses I felt more and more that she was a really nice horse. She's not perfect but is a lovely mover and I can't add anything more on the subject of the stallion, she'll have a high residual value.
"She will be for a group of friends and partners, I’ll take a piece and she’ll probably stay in France. I thought she would be too expensive but I kept coming back to her and this morning I decided if there was one horse I wanted to buy, it was her."
Lot 84
b f Wootton Bassett - Equivocal (Street Cry)
Haras de la Louviere
Oceanic Bloodstock for €250,000
Michel Zerolo said: "I can't say who she is for. As to what I liked, it was the filly herself; the stallion, the pedigree, she has everything going for her. Plus she comes from a good stud."
Lot 95
b c Siyouni - Frame Of Mind (Invincible Spirit)
Ecurie des Monceaux
Daniel Cole for €340,000
"He's a very good-looking colt by a very good stallion in Siyouni,"said Hiroo Shimizu, who will train the horse for Japanese owner Shigeo Nimura. "He's really a nice horse. We hope he will follow the example of Midlife Crisis [the first horse ever owned by Nimura]."
Lot 100
b f Galileo - Giofra (Dansili)
Haras de la Perelle
France Turf International for €380,000
"She has a great page, being by a great stallion from an outstanding family," said France International's Philippe Jousset. "The dam's two-year-old is in training with Andre Fabre. She will stay in France."
Lot 126
b f Ribchester - Kerala (Makfi)
Haras du Cadran
Al Shaqab for €240,000
Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore Agency said: "Virtually every yearling I’ve bought from Cadran has been at least a winners if not black type. I bought Qemah and [Prix Nureyev winner] Alwaab from them for Al Shaqab and Pierre Talvard is a fantastic breeder.
"I saw the filly with Andre Fabre and he liked her a lot. Ribchester was a crack miler and maybe he could be the next Wootton Bassett as a son of Iffraaj. I loved Ribchester as a racehorse."
Lot 140
b f Dark Angel - Light The Stars (Sea The Stars)
Gestut Ammerland
Charlie Gordon-Watson for €340,000
"She's for a new owner and she’ll go into training with Andre Fabre. The owner is called Mr [Ahmed] Abu Khadra and it's his first horse. He is very passionate about polo, as is Andre Fabre, so they have a lot in common, while Andre obviously knows Ammerland very well.
"We were keen to buy her and she’s a beautiful filly. She is a really good-moving filly and it's exciting. I think my owner will buy one or two more."
Lot 143
b f Invincible Spirit - Lucrece (Pivotal)
Haras du Mezeray
Robson Aguiar for €350,000
"She is scopey and a nice big filly," said Aguiar. "My client has a dream that she will be able to win at Ascot and I think she has the potential to perhaps do that. I'll pre-train her in Ireland and afterwards we'll decide which trainer to send her to."
Lot 148
b f Shalaa - Mandheera (Bernardini)
Haras des Capucines
Al Shaqab for €260,000
"More than anything it was the model of the filly and for me she was the pick of all the Shalaa yearlings on the day," said Nicolas de Watrigant. "She has a very expressive face, which has much of her father about it, while in her body there is a bit more of [grandam] Mandesha. She is really a beautiful filly and she moves very well. She has a lot of quality. We really wanted her and Jean-Claude Rouget loved her."
