'We're already making plans to expand on this for next year' - IEVA inaugural Breeding Symposium goes down well
The Irish Equine Veterinary Association has successfully staged its inaugural Breeding Symposium for those in both the Sport horse and thoroughbred sectors.
The purpose of the symposium was to promote the latest in evidence-based medicine and facilitate networking between breeders and the Irish equine veterinary community.
A panel of experts assembled at the Lyrath Estate, County Kilkenny to deliver a series of talks and presentations to an enthusiast audience of more than 75 breeders.
The topics presented included biosecurity, epigenetics, hoof care and disease surveillance updates, and prepared those in attendance for the 2025 breeding season.
Breeders were also given the opportunity to attend a complimentary and informative parasitology workshop, delivered by veterinarian Dr Nicola Walshe, which preceded the breeding symposium.
Following the presentations, breeders were encouraged to network with one another and the veterinarians in attendance over supper.
IEVA would like to thank the speakers – David Beehan (DAFM); Alan Creighton, Irish Equine Centre; Nicole Groyer (Connolly’s Red Mills); Jennie Henderson, Ballylinch Stud; Niamh Lewis, UCD School of Veterinary Medicine; and Martin Payne, farrier – along with industry stakeholders and its series of sponsors, namely Connolly’s Red Mills, Coolmore Stud, Telenostic and Tattersalls Ireland.
IEVA vice-chairman Niamh Lewis said: “We are delighted with the turnout of breeders, all of whom were very enthusiastic and engaged throughout the evening. IEVA is already making plans to expand on this for next year."
