The third Yorton Sale gets under way on Thursday lunchtime with 45 two-year-olds and yearlings set to go under the hammer.

There is plenty of reason for optimism for a sale which has produced profitable pinhooks and winners on the track from two catalogues of young horses.

Following on from the Goffs UK September Horses in Training Sale, the auction in Powys provides buyers with an opportunity to resupply with youngstock before next year's store sales.

Among the highlights for this year's sale are a Pether's Moon filly (Lot 16) out of a winning Stormy River half-sister to Punchestown Champion Chase and Melling Chase scorer Fox Norton, a Malinas gelding (35) out of an unraced half-sister to Grade 3-winning hurdler Stormy Mountain, and a Pether's Moon gelding (40) out of a full-sister to Scottish Champion Hurdle winner Cheltenian.

Goffs UK managing director Tim Kent said: "This is the third year we've held the sale and the results on both the racecourse and the pinhooking front from past graduates have really made a number of new buyers sit up and take notice. George Stanners has been doing a lot of liaising with David Futter and the team and Yorton have managed to source a much better bunch of horses than we've had before.

"George and Jeremy Mactaggart were there for the vetting yesterday and they were very bullish about the standard of stock they've seen there. There's more people booked in to stay tonight and turn up tomorrow than we've had before and we're expecting to see a number of new faces up at Yorton.

He continued: "There's a few drinks and a bit of a celebration tonight so we'll have a better understanding of how many people are going to be there after that, but at this stage we're optimistic.

"We know David and the team have done a great job of prepping the horses and there's been plenty of demand for those horses up to now so we're hopeful that'll continue in a sunny Wales on Thursday!"

Yorton Stud owner David Futter said upon the release of the catalogue: "This catalogue marks the third Yorton Sale and we are delighted to see the event so well received by the industry – word continues to spread and its following is growing.

"The positive results achieved thus far have given us the confidence to invest more in the stock and I think that will show once again this year, we have a lovely selection of yearlings and two-year-olds."

He continued: “The sale is quickly becoming the primary outlet for the well regarded Yorton product and we have enjoyed another successful 12 months, headlined on the track by Easysland and Gentlemansgame.

"Yorton-bred or -sourced horses have also done very well in the sale rings – the 2021 store sales saw nine sell for a total turnover of £430,000 and an average price of £47,000. Among those were three very pleasing pinhooks sourced from this sale.

“Word on the sale has been very encouraging, we are getting a lot of interest from people who have not attended in the past, as well as positive comments from those who have, and we would like to encourage everyone who is interested to come to Yorton and enjoy this event. We're excited to open our doors to everyone on September 9."

The sale takes place from 1pm, while registration to bid online can be found at www.goffsonline.com.
